Furnes Passion Play Marking Annual Penitence in Belgium

The Belgian town of Furnes hosts its penitential procession on the last Sunday of July, the 248th such event, with Gothic churches, flags, and a crowd of townsfolk and visitors watching forty groups enact the Passion. After absolution in St. Walburgis, revelry and dancing follow as the festival shifts from sacred to worldly pleasures. The piece ends with a dull note on elephants in swamps and their struggle to lift themselves with trunk aided by straw and vegetation.
