Chicago undertakers seek end to Sunday funerals

A Thursday meeting in Chicago urged eliminating Sunday funerals with commendation for the effort. In Austin, South Boulevard property owners may accept Lake Street elevated railroad plans to pave South Boulevard with macadam. Harlem townspeople face surveyors from the Lake Street Elevated Co. who refused to answer questions. Two or three handfuls of common cast will kill a Canada thistle. Alderman Race proposed buying the Warren tract in Austin for a public park.

Town corruption claims and unpaid taxes linger

Mrs Irving, once labeled a chronic liar by a local correspondent, is said to have left town with numerous outstanding bills. The town attorney should pursue collection of these taxes though President Allen vetoed A J Readmond’s appointment as special attorney for special assessments.

At a Proviso town auditors meeting William Seeberg was appointed deputy collector with authority to pursue delinquent personal taxpayers. The stake includes several thousand dollars, and he plans a peaceful settlement before proceeding to legal action to recover the money.

Delegates Attend McKinley Funeral in Canton

Judges Chettain Smith and Dunne and Chicago figures joined Mayor Harrison and five aldermen Beilfuss Hunter Somlski Werne Brennen in Canton for the McKinley funeral. They traveled in a special hotel car furnished by F J Loesch of the Pennsylvania Railway. Alderman Hunter praised the president's simple Canton home life.

Mrs Eugenie Paul Transferred From Ward 35 to Ward 3

Mrs Eugenie Paul ward superintendent of the 35th ward is moved to the third ward. She is noted for keeping a very clean ward and has employed two policemen to shadow garbage wagons and a uniformed officer as body guard and driver during her term. She is praised for prompt responses to complaints and businesslike management.

Chicago Joliet Electric Line Opens With Notable Guests

The Chicago to Joliet electric line opened on a Wednesday with about 400 invited guests. The route connects with the Chicago City Electric line from Clark and Washington streets to Joliet and completes the trip in roughly two hours. Mayor Barr of Joliet attended along with many Chicago notables as refreshments were served. The fare for the ride was 87 cents each way.
