Boston May 20 The Davis Shoe Company a leading manufacturing firm in the state announced its assignment. Joseph Davis president also assigned. Assignees named Moses Williams of Boston and L F Spinner of Lynn. Liabilities near 1 000 000 assets nominally above. Businessmen surprised by the embarrassment.
A dynamite blast on a Hudson River road work train near Tarrytown destroys the train, killing dozens and injuring many Italians and crew. The blast blocks tracks, hurls bodies and debris, and prompts a grim search along the river and at Vanderbilt’s morgue. The count is uncertain, with reports ranging from thirty-three to about fifty dead as investigators assess the disaster.
Reports from Belgrade describe ex-Queen Natalie banished from Sergia after gendarmes breached her palace. She left with defenders’ farewell, while troops cleared the route to the railway for a train toward the Hungarian frontier amid mixed public reaction. Lockport New York May 20 The canal men face poverty as railroads threaten to undercut boatmen by carrying grain at reduced rates. Freight on wheat drops to 2 3 cents and 1 1/2 cents on potatoes to New York. Lumbermen join the boycott, no lumber ships, trade nearly at a standstill along the canal.
