Sable Island Ponies With Long Manes Roam Wastes
The Sable Island ponies live in roam ing herds guarded by patriarchal stallions. Their manes have grown extremely long, some reaching three yards. Once 400 to 500 animals, numbers declined due to export, harsh winters, and crossbreeding with domesticated stallions. Now eighty to 100 wild ponies remain, with about thirty kept domestically. Lifesaving crews ride them across dunes and lifeboats are drawn by ponies during wrecks. Some are sold in Halifax auctions for 15 to 18 dollars each.
