A Montreal suburb resident A Dupree thawed frozen dynamite on a stove causing a severe explosion. The house was wrecked and Dupree was badly injured. His two young daughters were fatally burned and a third daughter disabled with severe injuries. Mrs Dupree suffered a mental breakdown.
Kearney Commercial and Savings Bank did not open in Omata on February 3, as depositors faced disruption. The run stemmed from withdrawal of city and county funds. the state bank examiner seized control and will publish a statement soon. Both banks share president A N Dane, with combined capital of 150000 dollars. All local funds reside in the banks, and assets are expected to cover claims though the exact figures are unavailable. The cause of failure is unknown.
Feb. 4 in Lignpus Tenn. a dramatic flight of Jones Bros & Co Memphis cotton factors uncovers a massive fraud. The firm allegedly shipped 15,000 bales of dogtail cotton to New Orleans at false quality, dissolving two partnerships and consolidating under Jones Bros & Co. with losses estimated between $1 million and $1.5 million. The disappearances of all members and the bookkeeper sparked public alarm and speculation they fled to Mexico to avoid creditors.
A string of five killings within 12 miles of Johnstown Pennsylvania unsettles residents.
