Oak Park resident Mrs. J. Afley hosted the Fortnightly Euchre Club, with prizes won by Mrs. J. F. Stacy, Mrs. J. J. Quilan, Mr. J. Nolan, and Mr. F. Atley. Toledo visitors Mr. and Mrs. James Reinfeinder spent the holidays with local families, while Smith College girls Clara Waterman Eleanor Parsons Hannah Dunlap Florence Vaile and Susie Claffin arrived Thursday.
Christmas morning blaze at 148 Lake Street in Oak Park involved an oil store tied to N. H. Whittiesey's grocery in the Hoard block. Flames fifty feet high endangered the paint store nearby, but Oak Park fire department arrived quickly and contained the fire with losses estimated at a few hundred dollars.
On New Year’s Day from 2 to 6 pm Edith Furlong hosts a reception at N Harvey Avenue Oak Park with Bessie Morgan Alice Graves Pauline Fay Ollie Morgan Ethel Kellogg Blanche Irwin Bessie Bevington Elsie Speck Marie Hall and Edith Furlong plus Hazel Standart of Detroit. An evening dance at Library hall Austin follows led entirely by the young ladies and they will fill the dance program.
The General Grant council charters a car for attendees to Riverside for a union meeting on Saturday evening December 28, 1901. The car leaves L station at 8 o'clock, stops at Oak Park and East avenues, with a large class to be initiated and other features planned.
Mrs Lucy N Allen died Wednesday evening December 18 at her son President O D Allen’s home 432 Lake street after a brief illness due to old age. Born August 15 1805 in Belleville New York she married Harvey Allen in 1827 and had five children. Only living child is President Allen. She lived in Pierrepont Manor and Oak Park most of her life tending home and garden. Remains were taken to Pierrepont Manor for interment by President Allen.
The Military Mail correspondent reports the ceremonial locking of the fortress. Twenty minutes before evening gun, the regimental drum and fire band assemble at the convent. A sergeant with keys from a safe leads the procession, escorted by one commissioned officer and two men with fixed bayonets, to Casemate square. The key sergeant then rocks all gates into Spain as drummers retreat at the gun firing.
The Cicero town board adopted a resolution to retain possession of all town property books and papers until the constitutionality of the separation law is decided. Trustees Utley Crook Langston and Hinfeldt voted for the measure while Linden Dunham and most of the south end trustees opposed it. An informal meeting of the new village board occurred at Allen Ray’s home as officers were sworn in. The first formal meeting is set for January 2 1902.
Austin audiences welcomed the second annual Messiah presented by the Beethoven club led by Charles A Knorr. The 125 voice chorus delivered precise confident singing with new music for many singers as soloists Mrs Chace Maud Earl Burdett and Frank Minot Coffin impressed critics. Frank Collings and Dr Louis Falk received high praise for their performances in this favorable town reception.
A word of commendation goes to the ladies of the Presbyterian church for their public spirit in making the sway possible for the oratorio. The success depended on friendly cooperation among churches to present the performance.
Mr S H Kellogg has returned to Austin after four years in the regular army in the Philippines with a post at Manila. He was promoted from corporal to sergeant, left soon due to ill health, and plans to share many stories of his experiences while warning about the peril of cigarette smoking among soldiers.
The home of Mr. George Jacob at 227 Walnut Avenue burned last Friday at noon. Though not a total loss the fire caused a big hardship for the Jacob family with only 82.50 coverage on household goods. Mr H Greenwood on the second floor suffered total loss. Fred H Jones, agent, adjusted the insured amount.
The Weekly Town Talk and Job Printing office was relocated from Austin to the city last Sunday. George Dean, former owner, sold the business about three weeks ago to Jewish parties who felt the new location was unsuitable. Dean now runs independent telephone business at McComb, Mississippi.
On December 23 fifty five avenue Congregational church members held a surprise donation party for Rev. and Mrs. Forbes at 94 North 62d avenue. Sixty five guests presented gifts including silverware linen china tea and pantry items and a $45 cash purse. A social evening with a musical program followed the gift exchange.
Advertises Ban & Collins selling Lackawanna coal and urges immediate purchase due to uncertain future prices. Warns delaying, awaiting lower costs risks no supply and higher costs later.
Loren Kent a 29 year old Austin businessman dies of pneumonia. His sister Mary Kent, 23, dies next day of the same illness. Both buried in Forest Home vault and to be sent to Greenwood Cemetery New York. Richard Kent remains in California. Kent active in church and local clubs.
Branston died at his home on South Central avenue on Sunday from consumption after years of poor health. He served as cashier and treasurer for the Geo. B. Carpenter Company and was a prominent member of the Masonic order which conducted his funeral. He also belonged to the National Union and Royal League.
Aboard one line in the past season a dinner feature is transparent ice cream served with ceremony. Lights dimmed or portholes covered, waiters unveil cone shaped and inverted flower pot molds with clear and scarlet ice that hold candles. Molds are shared after a table is cleared.
Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria is a devoted naturalist at Varna on the Black Sea. He spends much time hunting and classifying insects plants and other aspects of nature. He catalogues Bulgaria's flora and fauna and funds a respectable zoological garden in Sofia.
Harlem reports include Christmas turkey gifts to race track workers. Arthur Norris, ex-Harlem express operator, quits after Humane Society disputes over his horses. Aug Schnelke, 77, longtime resident, dies and is buried from St John’s to Waldheim cemetery. New Year events planned at Miss Elma Hosier and Miss Clara Olson homes. Calvary mission at Harlem bowl hosts by day and night.
The Times lauds President Roosevelt at Philadelphia’s Franklin Field for standing and shouting delight, as Mrs. Roosevelt nudges and cheers. It notes the crowd’s electric energy, calls the game great, and predicts future generations will recall the president’s spirited moment and support for the armed forces.
