Dense smoke from peat bog fires near Centre Street and Passaic Avenue prompted Avondale Hose Company to battle the blaze from 8 a m to 8 p m. About 100000 gallons of water were used. Six men fought the fire as it burned five feet underground after an Italian owner started it to clear brush. He dug a three foot trench to contain it, but the fire spread beneath. Quelling will need severe frosts and heavy rain.
The Franklin Building and Loan Association reports its twenty fourth annual meeting will be held Wednesday night the 19th in their rooms. The past year was the most prosperous with loans surpassing $200000 and earnings at seven percent. Three directors will be elected and officers reappointed as the annual report is submitted.
Mr. William K. Stebbins of Mount View returned from a three week trek in Minnesota. He was in the Forest Fire District and described the recent Bres-and forest damage as almost beyond estimating.
Nutley Democratic Club speakers argued for party gains this fall in St Marys Hall. H A Herbert defended a town ordinance plank while John Mutch and others promoted honest governance. Assembly hopefuls Mylod Bracken and Shalvey forecast victory as plans for rallies and a Martine speech were announced.
Chief Wright Sutcliffe warned Nutley saloon owners to close on Sundays as required by law. He personally visited each establishment to deliver the mandate and cautioned that past conduct would not excuse future violations.

Miss E Faulkenbury of Hillside Avenue led a Columbian social on the eve of the holiday in honor of the great discoverer. Members from St. Pauls Congregational Young People and Centenary M E Epworth League attended a musical program. Mrs Walter E Erler and Miss Elizabeth Van Winkle sang solos.
Grace Church Ways and Means committee offers a high class sewing machine for rent by the day to raise funds for the church building. Last year a vacuum cleaner was rented similarly with good results and the ladies expect similar success this time.
