Nutley Boy With The Colors Dies Of Influenza
Belleville native Harry M. Garside died at Pelham Bay Naval Station on October 8 from influenza. A Prudential collector in Nutley for three years, he enlisted in the Naval Reserves July 24 and began petty officer training September 5. Born October 20, 1891, in Jersey City, he was a silversmith at Tiffany’s and later with Prudential. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Garside, a brother and two sisters of 398 Washington Avenue Belleville.

Famous Old Big Tree Undergoes Major Surgery
The famed elm at the Nutley Bellevue town line known as Big Tree had a major operation this week. Dozens of dead limbs were removed in an effort to extend its life, a change from years of limited preservation efforts. The tree, located on the Sanford, has long dominated the area and gave the vicinity its name.

Death of Private Claude Daw After Four Years Service
A Canadian government telegram notified the death of Private Claude Daw in action on September 27. Daw, 32, left a wife and a four year old son, and had been wounded once and shell shocked once in his first year. His mother, Mrs Ellen Daw of Princeton Street, received the news. His brothers served in France in different regiments.

The Nutley Military Relief and Home Service reports 40 Perth Amboy refugees, mostly women and children, were sheltered in Nutley after the Gillespie plant explosion. Fifteen stayed with John Stopyrowski, others at the Town Hall Fire House as Red Cross was notified. The Bank of Nutley arranged four and a quarter percent deferred payment for Liberty bonds, enabling refugees to finance purchases without interest until full payment.
