A June ninth school field day and track meet is planned as the eighth annual Grammar School event. Five schools compete in events with a special fifth grade relay added, prizes are ribbons for first and second places, and the meet will start promptly at 2 pm with events limited to the student body.
A field club meeting for Memorias Day parade plans grew tense as chairman Jamin Hurd clashed with Red Cross head Col Prout and Fire Chief Ormsbee. Arguments over parade preparations and column order were resolved before adjournment.
The Nutley Gun Club offered its firing range to a local Rifle Club after a Wednesday meeting. Home Defense League organizers aim to form the club and likely will accept the offer. Last Saturday’s special shoot featured Mrs. Frank E. Butler, formerly Annie Oakley, as guest and sharpshooting exhibitor.
Park Grammar School hosts its annual spring entertainment next Friday in the school auditorium to raise funds for new playground apparatus. The program features Friday assembly selections with instrumental pieces by John Bird Norman Sykes Lawrence Jenkins James Hatch and Edward Pedrette. Ruth Shea of Newark Normal School spoke to Nutley teachers on penmanship.
The weekly notice lists new and continuing Red Cross Honor Roll families and local chapter members. Names include W. W. Colpitts, M. E. Hudson, Hammatt Norton, Anna E. Ellsler, Guy Edwards, James Howe, H. B. Husted, and many others with numerous new entrants such as Mary Nicolls, Jennie Booth, Alfred Knowles, Frances Lilly, John Bowden, Margaret Bingham, Harold St. John, and Arthur Finn among the local chapter additions.
A scanned notice lists numerous individuals including Walter W. Winser, Mrs Burnham, E. de B. Schaefer, Mra L J Mack, Montague Geer, Sheridan A P Knowles, James A rt, Mrs Jennie Beatties, Carl L Maurfield, T Lovelace, Harry Donaldson, H C Paxton, R T Stowe, LeRoy Hollis, Mrs A G Calkins, Florence L Dolan, Nana E Kinney, William Heike, Alpheus Geer, and others in connection with a probate or estate matter, with typical formalities indicating heirs or claimants.
Eddie Nugent reports he drew a blank in the government aviation station drawing at Pensacola Florida used to select personnel for France bound training. He has not yet taken to the air.
The Woman's Club held its monthly meeting with notes on Atlantic City studies read by president Mrs. George B. Philhower and members including Mrs. William Bodge and Mrs. Louis E. Carman. Beginning Wednesday evening, those wishing to join classes should notify Mrs. E. S. Crawford. new member Mrs. C. C. Taylor was welcomed.
Mrs. Harry D. Finn presided at a department meeting with Mrs. Howard I. Wood present. Pupils’ benefit for the Red Cross netted 56 and a club house card party raised 28. Benjamin Hurd donated an electric sewing machine to the Red Cross unit. A May 30 literary section meeting was set by Mrs. Gilbert K.R. Livingston. Russia will be studied next year with Helen Keyes directing music and Russian dancing. Fourth of July plans include automobile rides and ice cream cones for children and a Town Hall dance. Girls' Agricultural League, led by Mrs. William Longfelder, reports three acres under Miss Alice J. Bickers and George Strong supervision. peas, beans, and potatoes planted, corn to follow.
The Home Garden Committee lists spraying procedures for fruit trees including peach and plum trees with lead arsenate after petals fall, lime sulfur and arsenate of lead two weeks later, and lime sulfur alone before ripening. Apples and seed fruits get lime sulfur, Bordeaux mixture, and lead arsenate at intervals. potatoes receive Bordeaux mixtures with lead arsenate during sprout and blossom times to combat pinkeye and blight. Some gardeners report success using Pyrox.
Social notes describe Wednesday war bridge at the Field Club under Henry M Libby. Several ladies host or attend card parties with notable guests from Nutley Passaic Rutherford Newark and Morristown. A Minutemen dance is canceled amid enlistments. Miss Hart Marvin and others plan showers and weddings. a recital is moved to avoid a recruiting meeting.
A parade of names appears from Centre street to Prospect street as residents plan visits, weekend trips, and family gatherings. The notes mention Mr A D MacCorkindale chairing a railroad delegation, trips to Camp Abena and Lake Pleasant, and visits to and from Philadelphia, Trenton, Chicago, Norfolk, Atlantic City, and Vassar College with several couples attending Memorial Day and other local events.
A compact ad listing a facial and scalp treatment at 304 Highfield Lane with a telephone contact 1039-2. The notice highlights shampooing and massage services in a personal care setting.
At the assembly on Wednesday afternoon Seniors gave a report on the Washington trip mentioning the Smithsonian Institute Roosevelt Collection Washington Monument Mount Vernon and the House of Representatives and Senate. The Junior Prom drew about 175 with Japanese lanterns purple and gold along Oriental decor. A Spot dance and a vaudeville sketch by Clark Carter and Milton Armstrong highlighted the program.
The Yountakab Country Club decided to divert money normally used for prizes to the Red Cross this year. The local Red Cross branch has applied for a portion of the fund.
Mrs Emma Guiles died Sunday night at her granddaughter Mrs William Lulands home 38 Myrtle Avenue. Rev Chester J Hoyt of Vincent Church conducted the funeral Tuesday afternoon. Interment followed in the church cemetery. She would have been seventy nine next month and was born in Belleville. She was the widow of Miles a Civil War veteran who died twenty years ago. Survived by a granddaughter Mrs Charles Weiant of Newark and another granddaughter.
Mrs Hannah Price wife of John Price died in her seventy fourth year at the home of her daughter Mrs Louis Zimmer 87 Hillside avenue. She resided with her husband in the locality and her passing is noted by family and neighbors. Mrs Price leaves several grandchildren and relatives. Funeral arrangements will be announced locally.
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning for Mrs Price who had been an invalid for many years. She lived in Nutley for twenty one years after moving from Jersey City. James Monahan a local preacher of Jersey City officiated burial took place there. She is survived by her husband a daughter and one son William Price.
