Jimmy Woodruff of Prospect Street aboard the Vermont sends two posts detailing the Vera Cruz action on May 10 and 11. He recalls heavy combat with Mexican forces, mentions killing at least ten Mexicans for every sailor lost, and notes a boat capture and English cruiser signaling support during the land engagement on April 22.
Judges Martin and Osborne announce a public hearing to consider establishing a County Vocational School for Essex County. The session, at the Common Pleas Court in Newark, Friday June 12 at 3, will include educators, labor and public representatives, and a briefing by state and county education officials.
The Vincent Church reception Thursday night filled the social hall chapel and supper room with spring flower decor. Rev. Charles H. Powers delivered a welcome address. In the receiving line stood Mr. and Mrs. Joseph D. Little, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Kingley, Ray and Mrs. Powers, Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. Marion L. Lewis. Mrs. Smith chaired the committee. Mrs. Horace Tantam sang solos with Helen Lindstrom, and Wors dell Pierson led an orchestra with Percy Lafitin at the piano.
The Board of Health meeting Tuesday night was postponed due to lack of a quorum with only John Ayleson present.
Justice Trenchard today filed an opinion declaring the Hennessy home rule act invalid. The ruling holds the measure as special legislation and unconstitutional to deprive cities of the benefit of other acts. The decision stems from suits by the city of Trenton challenging the act for commission government municipalities statewide.
The Nutley A C from Nutley plays the Majestic Stars of Newark this afternoon on the Park grounds. Sunday the Stars meet the Riordans of Harrison at the same venue in a second contest.
More than 400 gathered at Grace Church and overflowed into the vestibule for the funeral of John Howe. Rev. Douglas Matthews led services in a flower decked chancel, with burial in Cedar Lawn Paterson in the family plot. Pallbearers included William A. Lambert William J. Berg John Corb Mayor Blum John F Cisrk and Riechsid W Booth.
The Bank of Nutley Board of Directors mourns the death of longtime director and recent president John Howe. The resolution notes his policy aims and community generosity, praising his sound judgment, temperate nature, and broad sympathy. A copy of the resolution will be sent to his family with heartfelt sympathy.
Memorial to veterans will be held at Vincent Church with Capt Henry Vreeland Poat of Belleville invited. About twenty veterans and delegates from local lodges Junior Order Uniformed Rank Knights of Pythias Daughters of Liberty and Royal Arcanum will attend. Henry H Meyer arranges decorations and a regimental bugle will sound calls during the program. Pastor Rev Charles H Ponfra will preach True Patriotism and motor service will assist those unable to walk to the service.
Mrs Elliot Ritchie of Boston is a guest of her brother Benjamin Hurd of North Rosdijan and has returned home after the visit.
Nutley Realty Company reports vigorous spring sales in Hillside avenue and Yantacaw place tracts. Multiple six room and semi bungalow cement stucco homes sold or under construction, with occupancy targets by mid summer. Purchasers include Gustave Whitehead Newark and J M Juch New York, among others.
The Nutley Improvement Society launches a campaign to curb the hook fly with public cooperation. Health Officer Frank J. Osborne urges screens on food, flyproof cans, and disinfecting premises. Dr. E K Sprague cites disease risks and past mosquito efforts as a model for reducing pest threats.
A spelling contest pitting twenty men against twenty women from St Pauls Congregational Church ends with the men outlasting the women. Top male spellers were J B Emerson and T S Merrill. top female spellers were Mrs E R Gardner and Mrs A L Harlan. Prizes included dictionaries and a gardening book. Recitations and music followed with performances by Mire Harry D Finn Mrs Abram R Taylor J Halsey Sargent Walter W Graves Frederick A Ferris Howard Ferris and Miss Genevieve Taylor.
Whitford avenue resident Harrison Law has been elected assistant, secretary and manager of the Fire Brokers Association of New York City. A recognized authority on insurance, he publishes and authors statistical insurance tables and related works. He will assume duties around June first.
The young men of St Pauls Church hosted the second competitive dinner on Thursday night at a cost of eight and eight tenths cents per plate. Thirty six people attended and the total cost was $3.18. The boys offered hamburg steak boiled potatoes peas corn bread and butter eatsup and apple pie ala mode. The girls earlier served the first dinner and judges declared it a tie.
The Nutley Progress Day Committee will report a new chairman tonight as it debates postponing the celebration to the Fourth of July or next fall. The Board of Trade opposition and questions of project support prompted renewed calls to revisit the nominating process and fill the chairman post promptly.
The Nutley Firemen's Exempt Association elected its officers for another term at its annual meeting held at Yantacan Chemical Engine Co. No. 1. Incumbents retained include President Mayor Blum, Vice-President Harry H. Stager, Secretary J. Harry Winkie, and Treasurer W. O. Davin. Delegates named for the State Convention in Hackensack on June 17 are Frank P. Barr Selden Davis H Fired Boots August Fellrath and James D. Foy.
Frederick Dittig son of Mr and Mrs Frederick Dittig of Vreeland avenue wed Gladde Snowden in Los Angeles where he now resides. The ceremony took place two weeks prior.
At a Monday night Board of Commissioners meeting the fate of a women member remains unsettled. Two retiring members, President Miller and Joseph G. Lamb, must be replaced. Miss Annie L. Van Winkle is favored by women’s groups. Some members previously refused service but have now agreed to serve unconditionally.
A benefit event held Thursday at the movies for former ball player Frank Diven drew more than 800 attendees. Kenneth Lee, once a Nutley resident and Diven’s nephew, organized the affair with the help of a committee. The total raised was not disclosed.
