Edgar T Humphrey joined Nutley Fire Department as a charter member on March 16, 1894. He served with Yantacaw Hose and Touck No 1 later Yantacaw Chemical Engine Co No 1 and became secretary with rank of assistant chief, serving under several chiefs. He chaired the Fire Committee and helped found the Nutley Exempt Firemen's Association, later becoming State Secretary of the New Jersey State Exempt Firemen's Association, elected in 1905 and re-elected annually.
