Sergeant Bruskin of the 312th Infantry writes from Alise Ste Reine about Raymond Blum’s death, praising him as a hard worker and good soldier. He criticizes others with “bomb-proof” rear jobs and recalls frontline strain, long hours, and the dangers faced by doughboys.
Telegrams report Clarence W. Chandler severely wounded on November 11 in France just after the armistice. Malcolm M. Slaughter is said to have been gassed and shocked on October 17, with no update since early October.
Chief of Police Wright Sutcliffe received a telegram from his son Samuel stating arrival at Newport News Virginia. A letter said he was in a French hospital doing fairly well and hinted at a wound but gave no definite information.
Nicholas Francisco of Newark avenue learns by telegram that his son, Cockswain Joseph Francisco, is critically ill from influenza at a Philadelphia naval hospital. Francisco enlisted in the navy three years ago last August. Ensign Richard Ellis and Elmer Hed visited Dr and Mrs T Ellis. John P Lom, U S Navy, returned to Block Island after visiting his father, former Mayor J P of Preepeet street. Corp Carl Sheffler of Montclair avenue has been Sed ca Ome.
The speaker describes two planes, an Avro and a French Neiuport, and explains the outside repair unit for lost pilots and wrecked planes. A dedicated pilot surveys the countryside, and Ford vehicles with custom bodies carry tools, spare parts, and two mechanics. The unit assists landings, assesses airworthiness, and reports fatalities to personnel. morale suffers as friends are lost, and hopes rise for orders to return to the States.
Captain J. W. Pedraon of the Royal Air Force, with a squadron in Belgium, receives the Distinguished Flying Cross. He recently returned to Belgium after a short visit to Paris. He is associated with Nutley and resides in Centre.
A letter from Ralph Cardasco of the 312th Infantry to his parents says he is in a French hospital recovering from gas poisoning received during fighting in the Argonne Forest. He notes the injuries are severe but he is not listed among the casualties.
Mrs. William F Dabney of Durant reports her son Fairlee Dabney remains in a French hospital recovering from diphtheria now suffering throat pemee. He serves as an ambulance driver in the American army with Coxswain Victor George Harrisburg Seaman Albert Huck Birport Seaman George Stauber Cincinnati and Gunner's Mate William Tanen Boston who visited him this week. Other servicemen including Sergt T Hamilton have returned home from captivity and are listed as at their homes on Weecland avenue.
Letter from Charles Connolly of the 1st Engineers to his parents recounts sail from Hoboken on the Finland August 7, landing at St Nazaire, training at Gondrecourt, front assignments north of Toul and Verdun, Cantigny attack, St Mihiel, Meuse sector fights, and movement toward home with occupation forces as armistice ends.
Letters from servicemen including Walter Gorman of the 312th Infantry express weariness of France, desire to return home, and fatigue with being overseas. Other notes mention furloughs, naval reserve duties, and holiday visits while awaiting orders and reuniting with families.
In Nutley the December letter carriers contest ended with William Cullen collecting two five dollar stamps and Desiree winning a one stamp prize. overall carrier sales reached 3742.64 dollars, Nutley town total 19002.76, against a 25000 goal. Nutley per capita sales neared 13.50 with a national thrift push planned for 1919. Omas J. O Neil urged agents to promote the new blue 1919 stamps bearing Benjamin Franklin and to push stamped cards and books through 1923.
Miss Katherine Lyons of 217 William Street Harrison and Joseph Arnt of 167 Franklin Avenue Harrison were married Thursday afternoon at Holy Cross Church. Rev Father Holton officiated. Miss Katherine Case was bridesmaid and Earle Wheatley served as best man. They will live in Nutley after a reception at the bride’s residence.
Miss Anna Steinlauf daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Steinlauf of 198 River Road and Emanuel Greenberg son of Mrs Benjamin Greenberg of 377 South Sixth Street Newark were married last Sunday afternoon by Rabbi Julius Siberfeld at Mon Hall Newark. The maid of honor was Mollie Reeeere sister of the groom and bridesmaids were Miriam Levitch Minnie Steinloof and Irene Sable all of Newark. Maurice Berkowits served as best man. After a trip the couple will reside at 377 South Sixth Street Newark.
Miss Margaret L. McGuire daughter of John W. McGuire of 81 Linden Avenue Passaic married last Sunday to Thomas F. Murren a member of the local police force. The ceremony was performed by the Rev Thomas J pastor of St Nicholas Church Passaic.
Miss Marjorie Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs William R Johnson Center street and William C Hull of the community are linked in a forthcoming social announcement in local society circles.
A general order issued December 27 stops Red Cross official production activity. More workers are needed for refugee garments. Knitted articles must be completed and sent to the division for winter use. Stocksson will be given or welded for instructions. All remnants must be returned to chapter headquarters at once.
Grace Church plans a special musical service tomorrow featuring a cantata conducted by Almon G. Calkine with baritone soloist Frank Carl, soprano and director Mrs. Henrietta P. Wescott, violinist Charis Wickenhoffes, violinist Mrs. Lewellyn E. Pratall, and organist H. L. Cox.
The new commutation tickets, besides bearing the name of W. G. McAdoo Director General of Railroads, also list C. L. Chapman of this town as acting General Agent of the Erie Railroad.
Mrs Henry A Connolly of Highfield Lane Nutley died after a three month illness at St Marys Hospital aged fifty. She previously served as assistant postmaster during Mr Connollys term and helped advance class work at the post office. She was born in Bloomfield moved to Nutley early, married after a papal dispensation to a man named after the pope. Survived by husband and son two brothers two sisters and a funeral at St Marys Church with Rev Edward FP burial in Olivet Cemetery Bloomfield pallbearers named from Nutley and Belleville.
The bakery is now operated on the premises by the new owner and will bake locally. Charles Zohar transfers ownership and the shop continues to produce on site.
The local police, acting as licensing agents, plan to begin strict dog license enforcement on January 1. Sommnhs will be issued to owners who fail to respond as usual.
Dr Edward P Wolf reported his automobile stolen last Friday from St Marys Hospital. The car was found next morning uninjured and containing tools from local garages. Charles Green of Passaic was arrested and fined 10 dollars and costs by Recorder Post. Werner was ordered to Police Monday.
