Nutley Choral Society announces its first public concert on February 24 with several New York soloists. Despite storms rehearsals have averaged 75 to 80 members from a 95-member enrollment. Conductor E J Fitzhugh seeks support from associates and plans extra rehearsals, including one on February 17.
Mrs Idella Nichols Gardner of Eim place will participate in a suffrage debate at Asbury Park Congregational Church on Monday evening the 7th. She will argue in favor that woman suffrage would improve society while Rev Andrew F Underhill of New York’s Church of the Ascension will present the opposing view. Gardner has just returned from New Haven where she led the New Haven Political Study Club.
Mayor Luz and Hon. John F. Clark attended a convention of New Jersey mayors in the State House at Trenton yesterday. They met to discuss obtaining uniform municipal laws and to prepare a bill for presentation to the current Legislature.
Arrangements are set for a Mardi Gras event under St Marys Church on Tuesday evening February 8 in St Marys Hall East Nutley. Admission is twenty five cents and a reception will precede dancing.
Special services will be held at St Mary's RGC Church during Lent. Ash Wednesday, the 9th, will feature morning and evening services. Additional services are scheduled Wednesday and Friday evenings throughout the Lenten season.
The committee in charge of selecting a new pastor at St Pauls Congregational Church plans to report favorably and urge a church call to Rev Henry Conduit of Flushing. Impressions of both the committee and the church are positive, making adoption likely after tomorrow mornings services.
Selena Cotteleno of Humbert street was fined 15 dollars and ordered to 15 days in county jail by Recorder Party on Thursday night. Arrested by Chanceman Giangarelli for brandishing a knife and allegedly threatening to kill her husband Raffeo Cotteleno, she had a prior arrest for a similar disturbance and could not pay the fine, thus entering jail.
The Nutley Park Commission plans to apply to County Park Commissioners to extend the park system to Nutley. A Plan and Scope Committee meeting led by Hon. John F. Clark will discuss recommendations for adoption. A Nutley Park Commission meeting will be convened in a few days.
Miss Edna Lox of Prospect street chairs the arrangements for the State School Club dance at the Fortnightly Club House this Friday evening February 11. The club includes graduates of the State Normal School at Trenton with guests from Newark Paterson Passaic Nutley Orange and Montclair. Patronesses are Mrs. W E Broadbent Mrs Newton Woodruff and Mrs Freeman Kline.
The Friday Afternoon Club will present The Ladies of Cranford at the club home of Mrs. W J Kinsley on February 18. The performance, a dramatization of Cranford, was postponed from January 28 for Gentlemen s Night.
Miss Stella Hicks of Brooklyn is engaged as supervisor of drawing in Nutley schools to take the place of Miss B L Nichols.
The Fortnightly Club held its annual masquerade on Thursday night with original costumes and a prettily decorated hall. Supper followed at 11 o'clock in the balcony as masks were removed early. Guests included numerous couples and individuals from Nutley East Orange Brooklyn and Newark.
Sixteen ladies from the Kia Ora Whist Club attended a Thursday matinee of Mrs Dott starring Billie Burke at the Lyceum. The party lunched at the Chelsea and included Mrs Hatch to Mrs Merriam among the guests.
The annual Albany Normal School Alumni banquet will be held tonight in the Wanamaker dining room in New York. Local teachers attending include Miss 5. B. Lockhart Miss Emma A. Reith Miss Elizabeth Rogers and Miss Grace L. Baker with Miss Lockhart serving on the arrangements committee.
Mrs Alexander Carleton of Nutley Avenue will host a dance at the Nutley Field Club tonight in honor of her niece Miss Margaret Mile of New York who has been visiting for several weeks. Guests from Nutley New York and Brooklyn invited.
The will of the late John DeVausney filed Monday in Newark leaves his estate to 14 heirs including his children and grandchildren in Nutley Bloomfield East Orange and Belleville. Executors are his two sons William and Samuel DeVausney. The will was made on September 11 1899.
The Story Hour at Park School Monday afternoon features Mrs Gilbert R Livingston narrating the Norwegian Fairy Tale The Castle that was East of the Sun and West of the Moon. The library is open daily from 3 to 3 p.m. for public access.
Progressive Lodge Knights at Honor relocates to Military Hall at Elm and New streets and will hold its first meeting in the new lodge rooms on Tuesday night the 5th inst.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthor Breese Proal hosted a dance for their daughter Ruth Harris at their new Edgewood Avenue home on a Saturday night. Around sixty guests attended, including many from New Jersey and New York such as T. L. Cuy ler Princeton, Charles Butler Hackensack, Donald Dickerman Montclair, Sigurd Hersloff, George Hill, Lyman Nichols, Sargent Bouvier, Katherine Bird sall, Elizabeth Bailey, Miriam Mathias, Jessie Fraser, and Antoinette Rogers, among others. Many hosts and guests listed as Mr. and Mrs. Lamb, Mr. and Mrs. Edwards, and other local families.
Mrs J Harry Hull hosted a bridge gathering on Vreeland avenue with three tables in play. Guests included Mrs Lyman Nichols Mrs G J Edwards Mrs W F Dabney Mrs P P Lakens Mrs J G Lamb Mrs L S Thurston Mrs C S Thurston Mrs W Boyle Miss Kate C Lambert Mrs M M Michael Nutley Mrs La Motte Montclair and Miss Elizabeth Barrett Bloomfield.
Mrs Guy J Edwards hosted a Thursday afternoon bridge whist at her home for visiting Mrs W G Boyle of Cleveland Ohio and Mrs J Cary Bolger of Burnett Place. Prizes went to Mrs Boyle, Mrs Bolger and Mrs W K Stebbins, with other attendees including Mrs H M Scholefield, Mrs William Forman Dabney, Mrs Louis S Thurston and Mrs Charles S Thurston.
The Tuesday Evening Whist Club met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Higginson Dorr on Satterthwaite avenue. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. George Walcott Mr. and Mrs. Guy Edwards Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Carleton Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gladwin Mr. and Mrs. James Bolger Mr. and Mrs. Emil Tauchert Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lamb and Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Dorr. Tea was served after the games.
The Younger Set staged a masquerade at the Fortnightly Club House last night with Egbert Chandler and Edwin Dorch as the arranging committee.
Funeral services were held for Miss Margaret C. G. Cornell at the Davis home on Colonial Terrace with Rev. Herbert Dunbar officiating. Pallbearers included four nephews Frederic Davis T G Reid Cornell Reid and Alfred Cornell. Interment followed at Ridgelawn Cemetery.
Town Council will meet Wednesday night the 9th to consider the proposed new building code. The session may also address the extension of Prospect Street and other related matters.
Under the Ladies Guild of St Pauls Congregational Church a child oriented performance, organized by Mrs Chauvelot, will be held at the Fortnightly Club House on Saturday February 19 at 745 p m. Proceeds go to the church mortgage and interest fund. Tickets 59 cents from guild members or at the door.
The Epworth League of Vincent Methodist Episcopal Church met Monday night at the church to review plans for raising the $500 pledged toward the new church building fund. Refreshments were served after the meeting.
Mr William Thurston of Franklin Avenue returned home during the week from St Josephs Hospital Paterson where she has been treated for a broken knee cap. Recovery will take several weeks.
Glen Ridge High School girls and boys basketball teams visit Nutley High School this afternoon at Park Auditorium. Games start at 3:36 o clock.
The Ladies' Social Circle of the church is reforming and preparing a notable entertainment around mid month at the church building. Prominent local and out of town talent will contribute to the program.
Mr. Kinsley of Prospect Street spoke to the League of the First Presbyterian Bloomfield on Thursday. A large audience listened as he discussed deciphering forged handwriting.
