Nutley Areas Stir With Social and Club News

Neighbors from Franklin avenue, Portchester N Y and Babylon L I attend lodge events and visits while Nutley Country Club hosts a winter gathering. Local residents travel to St Louis and Liverpool, with Belleville’s two papers The Times and The Guardian noted. Socials include Christmas dances at Fortnightly Club and gatherings at Daily street homes with Newark and Nutley guests.

Dinner Party Hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Dillon

A Wednesday night dinner was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dillon of Highfield Jane. Attending were J. A. Bush and Douglas Ballin of New York, Mrs. J. J. Leidy, and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Welch of Nutley.

Controversy Over Nutley School Costs and Board Proposals

At the Second Ward Association meeting in Masonic Hall Nutley heated debate arose over school costs with Superintendent A B Meredith refuting Vernon L Davey’s $74.60 per capita claim. Meredith showed lower figures and urged examining overall school spending and funding. Samuel Silverburg challenged the data, prompting motions for apology and a possible committee to review the reports.

Grace Church Signal Corps to Display Exhibition Drills

Grace Church Signal Corps will present an exhibition drill and dance at Fown Hall Auditorium on January 8. Lieut Arthur Drake of the 7th Regiment New York will review the corps which will perform reviews drills setting up exercises and the signal squad in action. Guard Mount is scheduled for 7 45 p m Councilman Henry M Libby is intruder of the corps and Welling Nichols is Captain.

Lace Sale Supports Grace Church Building Fund

Mrs. G. B. Philhower of Grant Avenue held a two day lace sale at her home with help from Mrs. P. J. Young to benefit Grace Church building fund. Imported duny and Florentine lace sold well and orders may continue through Christmas due to high demand.

Handwriting Expert to Rule on Bath Tub Mystery Note

Prospect street handwriting expert Mr. William J. Kinsley will decide if the East Orange note from the bath tub murder victim is forged. The case hinges on whether the victim’s aunt authored the message, with much riding on his determination.

Vantacan Engine Company No 1 conducted its annual election on Thursday at Town Hall. Elected officers for next year include President Abram Blum, Vice President Frank De Vausney, Secretary James D. Annual Smoker at Nutley Lodge Hosts New York Vaudeville Act

Nutley Lodge F and A M held its annual smoker in the Masonic Hall with a vaudeville show by professional entertainers from New York. A collation followed the performance. Committee in charge included A B Sturges R A Parke E D Bradley Samuel Bird Jr and Frederick Davis.

Mrs B S Cooke Dies at Forty in South Orange

Word comes from Nutley of the death of Mrs B S Cooke formerly of Vreeland avenue South Orange aged forty and ill for some time before death on Tuesday.

School Orchestra Organized Under John S Herron Leader

The school plans an organized orchestra led by John S Herron with prior experience from Trenton Normal and Paterson teaching. The group will perform at school functions and may replace the former High School orchestra.
