The Nutley Belleville district drafted 96 men with many called or summoned as the draft board released names. Exemptions were denied for nine in good physical condition, while dozens were required to appear for Tuesday hearings.
The Nutley Club lost to Paterson Independents 3 to 2 on Park Oval in a leaderful summer contest. Nutley fielding included Horner and Pasion of Nutley A C with Whitmarsh likely to cover third and Legs Lawrence returning at first base. Paterson showed stronger batting and pitching with Kane or McGinnity on the mound and Scorso behind the plate.
Allan B. Stirratt seeks state permission to shoot starlings destroying crops after a county board resolution on Tuesday. The state requires a town governing body to request permission for citizens to shoot the birds, and Stirratt had a similar permit last year. The report also notes local water charge receipts and a Hillside Avenue man fined for removing a water meter, with the penalty reconsidered after intent and owner orders were shown.
Superintendent John R Beachler announced Arnold C Harwood of Lakewood will become principal of the local High School, succeeding Charles Sera who leaves Nutley for Fremingham Massachusetts. Harwood, married, resides at 59 Mountainview Avenue and will move to Creepee Street. Beachler will relocate to 8 Labour Day. The Olivet College and Columbia Teachers College graduate arrives September 1. the Fall term begins September 10 with teachers seeking board housing contacting the superintendent.
Collector Charles V. Duffy of the Newark Revenue Office announces that persons liable under the Revenue Bill must inventory their cigarette and tobacco stock on hand the day the Bill becomes effective so it can be stamped with the proper tax.
A long safety education film by the Public Service Corporation is completed for release. The 3000 feet show trainmen and workers in incidents from haste and carelessness with a safety director’s lecture interwoven. Walter C. Van Brunt directed the production for Mrs. Katherine F. Carter’s educational company.
Park Commission places recreation director at children’s Field Henge in Yantacew Park to instruct kids in games around the sandpits and play areas.
The War Council of the American Red Cross budgets 10000 to clear Columbia South Carolina cantonment and nearby areas of malaria. Work in cooperation with the State Board of Health and Public Health Service includes draining stagnant water regrading creeks oiling pools and educating residents while screening houses and curing cases among civilians.
Michael Mozaio and Minnie Mozsio of 86 Bloomfield Avenue faced joint bail of 300 in Recorder Post’s court after admitting false ages at their December 21 1916 marriage.Mozzio’s name missing from registry sparked the inquiry and he pled guilty to the alleged falsehood.
Miss Edythe Kierstead of Chestnut Place and Miss Edith Carhart of Liberty, both connected to Stara and Stripes Leon, are entered in a popularity contest tied to a carnival in Newark Labor Day week. Miss Bessie Wallace of Belleville also competes as a town representative. The carnival runs along South Orange Avenue and line Street from September 3.
Curtis Prout, youngest son of Colonel and Mrs H G Prout, is named in a formal family notice. The report notes his status and kinship within the Prout household, reflecting a traditional society acknowledgment.
Practice on the Nutley Rifle Club range is in full swing with many men evenings drawn to the sport. The club on River road near Centre street accommodates 40 to 50 and aims to field a strong Nutley presence in upcoming National Rifle Association matches this winter. Communicate with R. J. Funeral services for Stephen Derr Jr the first Nutley boy to die in the war were held Monday at Grace Church. An auditorium full of mourners saw military honors at Rosedale Cemetery with Captain John Whitney leading Squadron A. Derr was killed last Friday in a Toronto aeroplane collision.
