Reports show a second set of milk samples from Adiriee sent to Orange laboratories for analysis to confirm if the town’s milk supply has improved since last week. The results are expected late next week as J F Reilly and Sons defend the cleanliness of their dairy while acknowledging a prior high count.
A party of four injured when an auto-truck crashed into a tree at Washington avenue and Highfield lane. Injured were Misa Yancy 23 t street Misa Edwards Newark street Baker 162 James street and Zellar Malary 125 Sheffield all taken to Newark City Hospital. Driver Simmons 295 Plane street Newark escaped with minor bruises. The car owned by a Newark firm was removed to Nutley Garage. Simmons had been given leave by his employer to use the car and was released after arrest.
An estate appraisal filed with Brooklyn Surrogate shows Mrs Helen Seymour Tiedeman left $74001.81. The will designates shares for her widow partner and relatives including Hortense Buchenberger and others.
Benjamin P. Clement of Bloomfield reported a crash at Franklin Avenue and Essex Street when his car struck a hound that ran into the street. The motorcycle was badly damaged while the dog wandered off. Clement, with minor injuries, was ordered to answer in Police Court for damages to the motorcycle.
Superintendent Beachler seeks housing for about 40 teachers as schedules open. An all day institute is planned Friday the sixth, followed by Monday opening, with talks by New York and New Jersey educators as part of a staff program.
Kurt Moebius returning home from a summer place found ceilings floors and furniture ruined by water from a third floor pipe. Estimated damage about 500 dollars.
Constantino Steffanelli of 3 Hancock Avenue arraigned on grand jury charge after stealing 70 dollars from his son and possessing a concealed weapon. Bail set at 300 dollars. default bail 2000 led to county jail commitment but was reversed for a rehearing. Other arrests include wine sale without license at 124 Bloomfield Avenue and posters nailed to trees in Washington Avenue. George Griffin fined 20 dollars for posters. Alfred DuBois fined 10 dollars for driving past a standing trolley.
A. B. Meredith assistant director of educational work in New Jersey formerly Nutley now at Dix during August aids in educating non English speaking soldiers. She is stationed at the Y M C A headquarters and will be in charge during temporary educational director H Townsend’s absence.
The War Department reports difficulty securing enough charcoal used in gas mask filters, hindering production for protective equipment. Government sources cite supply chain constraints and competing wartime needs as contributing factors.
The Monday casualty list includes Paul Martino of 16 Essex Street Nutley listed as Missing in action while in Company F 38th Infantry. He was 19, worked at Sonneborn Oil Works and attended Nutley Public Schools. Captain R Ranney Adams is noted as killed in action on the Marne salient. he was 23 and a brother to Lieut. R Ranney Adams, though not a Nutley resident.
Lieut Harold Fisher of the 168th Infantry was wounded twice in one day during service, facing a machine gun hit in the right cheek and a sniper wound to the shoulder while crawling toward American lines. The 25 year old trained at Plattaburg and is reported by his mother Mrs. T H Fisher of 108 Vreeland Avenue. Also noted are military and civilian wartime updates including Hampton Auld and Youne Auld surviving a perilous voyage to Bermuda, crews salvaging a leaking vessel, and local residents enlisting or serving overseas such as Frank Zingler, Fred Windheim, Florian Miller, Nugent Freeman, Harold Bellows, and Wilson Kierstead.
Sergt Alvin Reynolds of the 7th Engineers reports to his sister Mrs John Roth at 220 Bloomfield Avenue that army life is busy but enjoyable He recalls sharing cigarettes with fellow soldiers after a reunion and describes hiking across France front line experiences twice reaching safety and planning another return to duty He notes good meals rest and surprisingly quiet nights despite the guns and his willingness to continue serving.
George Bradford and Gladstone Harter of Hawthorne avenue met by chance in Paris while on furlough and explored the town together. The news came to Mrs. J. B. Bradford from her son in the 147th Aero Squadron in France. Bradford, who often works twenty hours straight, says he feels better than ever. Harter is his second fortuitous French acquaintance, first meeting David Hallidy of Lake street when his transport landed months ago.
Four members of the Franklin A C enlisted in the U S Marines this week. They are Thomas Pignataro Earl Manning Felix Levandoski and H Pulata. Pignataro was given a farewell supper at the Peerless Inn Thursday night by his fellow club members. A bullet riddled Red Cross flag has been sent home by Elmer Rawcliffe of Newstreet who is an ambulance driver as evidence of how the Huns treat hospitals. He took it from a hut attacked by German aircraft. Philip H Woodcock has been transferred from the 312th ae to the Headquarters Detachment 7th Division now at the front. Lieutenant Frank Hartshorne of Yantacaw place in the aviation service has sailed for France.
Two Nutley men Leo Ferragina of 142 Chestnut Street and John Gruzecski of 2 Entwhistle Avenue will leave for Camp Meade Maryland Monday as part of a Nutley Belleville district draft quota of twelve. Nine others come from Belleville and one from Jamesburg previously of Belleville. Louis Sinkowitz of 113 East Passaic Avenue is an alternate.
The Nutley N J S M R battalion hosted Major General W M Black who praised discipline and military courtesy after a highly effective drill. Black spoke on front line impressions from France and noted his three sons also serve. The adjutant Lieut Lovell can be contacted for additional training, and extended order fundamentals were emphasized.
Reformed Church and Vincent Church Red Cross Unitas report overseas units acknowledge Christmas boxes sent last fall. Letters from Hirun Jennines of the 28th Engineers and Ralph Mattison of Rockford HL express appreciation, noting the boxes greatly lift spirits on a midsummer Christmas day.
Fourteen year old David Mathers of 43 Church Street has been missing since August 9. Parents urge anyone with information to contact local authorities as search efforts continue.
George L. Record told about fifty in a Franklin Avenue tent that opponents of his, including Governor Stokes and Congressman Gray, would serve big interests. He claimed Swift & Co. funded Edge supporters and criticized government ownership. Assemblyman Bell Close spoke as Gray and Edge campaign vigorously, with Gray saying he aims to enter the Senate race via direct primaries.
Nutley Chapter of the American Red Cross shows July receipts from units totaling 22 517 articles and shipments to the Atlantic Division totaling 13 090. The headquarters received surgical dressings hospital garments knitted articles hospital supplies and comfort kits among items listed with specific counts.
