Nutley residents report planked shad, shop ads for Cherriline Dentifrice, and social visits. Meetings at Grace Church vestry and Yantacan Chemical Engine Co. No. 1. Libby undergoes appendicitis surgery. Kinsleys witness handwriting cases in Wilkes-Barre. Nutley Improvement Society plans street seats and cleanliness drive.
The Nutley fire department asks when its yearly inspection will be set. No inspection has occurred since Arthur Stager became chief. The town ordinance requires annual inspections and previously the department held one each year. The department comprises two companies, Yantacan Chemical Engine and Avondale Hose, and is deemed highly efficient in the state.
Firemen responded to an 8 o clock alarm from box 14 for a brush fire near Adrian H. Larkin’s residence on River road. Flames spread over more than two acres of brush and undergrowth. with no water source or well in the area, crews succeeded in checking the blaze before it ran out of control.
With the Bowlers, Woodside Council, Royal Arcanum, and Kemp ton Council, the town held a three-game series on the alleys. Woodside won two games. The schedule notes alleys available Wednesday or Thursday, with open games Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights. The two-man tourney alternates on Masonic and Fortnightly alleys on Friday and Tuesday nights. The contestants and team numbers follow.
In Thursday basketball at St Marys Lyceum the Belleville A A beat the Lyceum Seniors 18 to 20 after a 14 to 12 first half. In the second contest Lyceum beat Belleville 21 to 18 with the same officials. Next Thursday Lyceum hosts Company A Second Regiment Passaic New Jersey for a strong contest.
On Wednesday night Seth Boyden Council Royal Arcanum of Belleville defeated a Kempton Council team. The locals won two of the three games. High scores over 200 included P. Me Hligot 218 and EF. Van Nortych 225.
On Friday the 14th the Seth Boyden Council Royal Arcanum of Belleville will roll the bowlers from Kempton Council on the Fortnightly alleys. Mr Lobb the steward invites interested persons to join a new club now forming.
The Nutley Masonic Hall held its formal opening on Friday the 31st with a shareholders reception for town officials and guests. Decorated halls featured bunting and flowers as a concert ran 8 to 9 30 p.m. followed by dancing and refreshments. The event was organized by John J. Wesseler and a board including Samuel Bird Jr T J O Neil and G I Markham with T H Ritchie John Howe L M Thatcher W A Lambert and BE Faith as reception committee.
St Pauls Congregational Church holds Sunday worship at 11 a.m. with the Meaning of the Cross to Jesus. Evening service at 7 46 p.m. on Going to the Father. Sunday School at 9 45 a.m. and 2 30 p.m. Young People meet at 7 p.m. Mid week meeting on Wednesday at p.m.
The regular Town Council meeting is set for Wednesday evening April 12. Officials expect Council Chambers to be ready and new furniture installed for the session.
An advertisement urges maintaining bodily vigor and home sanitation to ward off germ diseases. It touts Malt Extract as a premier body tonic and Pure Napthium as a non poisonous all purpose disinfectant, with instructions and pricing.
On Sunday Rev. William Stuart preaches at 11am with Quarterly Communion at 1am and a sermon on Increase Decrease at 7 45 pm. Sunday School at 9 45 am and Bible Class at 7 15 pm. Sons and Daughters of the King meet at 8 pm. Wednesday prayer meeting led by EBV Cockefair.
The Royal Arcanum Kempton Council will hold a Monday evening meeting in the Masonic Hall at the corner of Franklin avenue and High street. Ladies Night features a full program of vocal and instrumental music readings and recitations followed by dancing. About ten participants are to perform music and Franklin Bishop directs the dance. seven grand officers and Past Grand Regent Horace I Bowne will appear. Members are urged to attend with friends as the event is open to all.
The Nutley Exempt Firemen’s Association will hold a meeting at Avon Dale Hose Company No. 4 on Thursday evening April 20. Nominations for officers for the coming year will be made and delegates elected to the State Exempt Firemen’s Association to be held next month in Belleville.
The Wickham house on Franklin Avenue Vreeland Avenue will not serve transient and permanent guests. Table board a specialty.
