The Ministers for a Better Humboldt will host a second open forum Friday July 7 at 8 p.m. at Our Lady of the Angels church in Humboldt. Crimes Rise Across City During Sixth Police Period
The sixth four week period (May 25 to June 21) saw higher crime in Fillmore, Shakespeare and Austin districts with citywide index crimes up 3.6 percent from the previous period and 4.7 percent year to year. Homicide led increases, up 25.6 percent from the prior period and 113 percent versus the same period last year.

Monkey captured after luring with bananas behind Central
A friendly small monkey living in trees behind 734 N Central was turned over to the Anti Cruelty Society after being lured into a milk-delivery tub cage in the Thuiller yard. Austin police declined to issue a ticket, noting no applicable charge. The simian was kept for a day and night before the society collected it.

Musician-Actor Prentiss Dies At 62 In Austin
Memorial services for Lewis R. Prentiss were held at Austin Westminster Trestryteran church in Austin. The longtime musician and actor, a former saxophonist and clarinetist who played with Bobby Meeker Clyde McCoy and Anson Weeks bands, later formed his own group with Charles Gaylord. He performed with Martha Raye and Lillian Roth in theaters in the round. Prentiss, an Austin High School graduate, was married to Nellie Lenters and served as elder and trustee of the Austin Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Beating Near Logan YMCA Injures Teen Terrence Maloney
Terrence L. Maloney, 14, of 3508 Fullerton, was attacked by three youths while returning from the Logan Square YMCA. He was struck with a board, kicked, and injured in an alley near Fullerton and Central Park. He was first taken to Belmont Hospital then moved to Augustana Hospital. He knew no reason for the assault.

Mailers can now send heavier parcels between post offices
Postal rules allow 25 pound parcels between first class post offices 150 miles or more apart starting July 1. The 20 pound limit has been raised. Size limit now 72 inches in combined girth and length. Parcels up to 40 pounds are mailed between offices under 150 miles.

Five Boys Caught Looting Semi Truck at GA Goodrich Co
Five juvenile boys aged 12 to 15 were stopped by Shakespeare police after a resident notified authorities of looting a 36 foot semi trailer behind the GA Goodrich Co. on Grand street. Six cartons of cake mix were found on the dock with other cartons missing. Several residents named the youths, who were released to their parents after questioning.
