School of Life Starts New Quarter at St. Luke Church

The School of Life begins its third quarter next Wednesday at St. Luke Church 2645 N. Francisco, running six Wednesdays 8 to 9 30 pm. Rev James White cites diverse courses including Understanding Black America taught by Beatrice Young and The Search for Quality Education with educators from public and parochial schools.

Leads Merchants At Annual Meet

Crawford department stores president Alan Garber will lead a merchant delegation to the Illinois Retail Merchants association annual meeting at the Sheraton-Blackstone hotel April 23-24. The program features talks by Leonard Revins on union relations, Rep Wilbur Mills with Rep Daniel Rostenkowski presenting, and Mayor Richard J. Daley with Carson Pirie Scott president C. Tuley High Hosts First Annual Community School Program

The Tuley High PTA and student congress co sponsor a 7 p.m. April 16 event in Fisk hall 1313 N. Claremont. Guest speakers include police commanders land William Muller Samuel Betances Marjorie B. Branch Virginia Krol and Jose Lopez. The program, themed International Night, features a variety show and exhibits highlighting international community links.

Marble tournament to be held at Mozart Park today

Mozart Park at Armitage will host a marble tournament at 4 p.m. for boys aged 9 to 11 in the midget class and 12 to 14 in juniors. The event requires no entry fee and the community is expected to provide marbles and support.

Blooming Flower Hats Highlight Kelvyn Park PTA Meeting

Kelvyn Park High School PTA invites members to a 1 p.m. meeting in room 209 with Robert Everson from Garfield Park Conservatory giving a talk on caring for blooming flowers. Mrs. Herman Spranger organized the program and attendees are asked to wear a funny hat for judging.

ONC Youth Group Probes Area Recreational Upgrades

The Organization of Northwest Communities youth committee meets 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1900 N Karlow to discuss improving area recreational facilities for youth. Chairwoman Ann Kirkwood notes Sumner Webb of the park district promised a summer program expansion with a shelter, activities director by June 16, a basketball court by month end, and a new 12 foot fence along the alley. She urges joining the Greenebaum Park Boosters to push for full-time facilities.

Walther Memorial Hospital Granted Three Year Accreditation

Walther Memorial Hospital has received a three year accreditation from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals. The review followed February site surveys and commends the hospital for maintaining standards and improving patient care.

Gun Registration Starts This Week in Chicago

Chicago launches city wide gun registration to May 15 for all firearms. Registrants must provide name address phone social security number license and weapon details. A 30 day return receipt and 10 day weapon surrender after notice are required with penalties up to 500 dollars for violations.

Pioneer Bank announces three promotions at a Friday board meeting. Theodore M. Pieper becomes assistant cashier noted for real estate loan work. James C. Yester is named manager of installment loan, and Thomas J. Dillon takes pro-cashier in banking. Pieper is Concordia Teachers College graduate with real estate training and previous Chicago area mortgage lending experience. Yester joined Pioneer earlier to expand installment lending and has broad banking background.

Logan Square area youths raise funds by selling YMCA Deran Thin mints to support day camp resident camp YMCA membership or special activities. For every five cases sold the child earns two weeks of day Camp Hastings located 45 miles north of Chicago offering outdoor activities.
