A Cleveland Herald report tells how Mathew Brayton, abducted at age seven in 1825 near Carey Ohio, endured thirty four years among Wyandots and Potawatomi and later ancestors, died family search, and his eventual identification and return. The piece details his travels, traders, and a long, perilous quest across Canada and the Northwest to locate his parents.
Sworin Jan 23 report: Leavy led a reconvened Legislature at Lecuipton, approving a resolution adjournment. Gov Medary vetoed it, but the veto was overridden 9 to 29 in the House and 29 to 8 in the Senate. New York dispatch notes 60 recruits to Texas from Jefferson barracks and various fort movements due to supply shortages. army orders also call for muskets to southern posts and transfers among forts. A social gathering at the National Hotel included Ex-Gov Pennington and other notable figures attending Seward’s event.
A Milwaukee paper reports on Wednesday the 18th a man named August Knorr killed himself with poison in a drug store at Sherman and Third. He left a note saying he was tired of the world and wished his body to be inventoried. The Intelligencer notes Alex Kirkoff, formerly of Mineral Point, was run over by an engine near Dubuque with doubtful recovery. January 13 near Manitowoc Mr Charles Palmer was found dead at the Two Rivers toll gate. his death is blamed on hard drinking. The Printer's festival in La Crosse for Franklin's birthday was a success. An Indian named Wansega froze to death near Motello. Buckeye Post OfficePostmaster John Donagan was arrested for routine mail abuse and held for trial. The U S District Court judge set bail at 1000. if bail not posted, he goes to jail for June in Milwaukee. The Wisconsin R W Grand Lodge officers for the year elected: M W CG M J Kirk Williams, RW GD M J B Willsor, RW G L Hills, and others. Deputy S W Smith appointed for District 6.
From The Plains Arigona correspondent reports Navajo Indians captured 6000 sheep from a rancho near St Craig and committed depredations in all quarters. New Mexico Legislature memorializes Congress to organize the Territory of Arizona. The President's message telegraphed to San Francisco papers bypassed overland mail at Motley. Messages show arrival dates in early January.
Cincinnati January 23. At a meeting of citizens a committee was appointed to arrange the reception of Kentucky and Tennessee legislatures expected Thursday. The Ohio Legislature adopted resolutions inviting that body to visit Columbus and appropriated 5 dollars to defray expenses.
A Boston writer in Oshkosh notes an unusually mild December with no storms. Snow fell quietly on two occasions, temperatures ranged from 27 below to 11 below zero, yet the air felt less harsh than typical moist winters. He promises to write more on other matters later.
