North Judson public schools open Monday September 9 as the board hires capable teachers and renovates facilities for a profitable year. With many students entering war service, educators pledge strong discipline, parental cooperation, and robust work to shape future American citizenship.
Senator Vardaman argues the president should have broad powers to manage war efforts including control of telephone and telegraph lines. He claims the president holds plenary wartime authority surpassing other branches, drawing Wilson's ire as reports urge Mississippians to oppose him.
The notice states Ralph Kingman should appear on the sale bills for Grant Tietz to be auctioned September 14 under auctioneer. Dr Downie also listed. Another copy of large bills in the issue includes HR J name.
On January 18 Chris Sautter will complete a 32 year career as a shoe man in North Judson. Mrs J F Woods and Miss Elsie Raschke are visiting So Bend at the home of Mrs Woods sister, Mr and Mrs W E Netherton. Pvt George Miller, son of Mrs Henry Miller, has been transferred from Nogales Arizona to San Antonio Texas, Co Hyooth Int, the unit that fought Mexican forces in the recent uprising.
The 16th Annual After Harvest Jubilee executive committee met at the News office and named officers including Jos Dolezal as President Otto Kriss as Vice President Orin S Schuyler as Secretary C W Weninger as Treasurer and several committee chairmen for publicity entertainment concessions finance exhibits decoration parale and play. Dates depend on Jackies Bands and Aero planes timing with Indiana.
The fourth Liberty Loan, set for October, targets at least 6 billion dollars, double the third loan, signaling strong Administration confidence and a spirit of teamwork. Ben Donchin store closed Saturday for holiday. Mrs Beetham reports son Claire arrived safely "over there."
More than 380 000 men expected to register as Indiana readies for the 18 to 45 age extension. State office logs hundreds of thousands of registration items and warns that misclassification carries up to a year in prison. Provost Marshal Crowder urges men to verify age before the registration day set for September 12.
A heavy rain and electrical storm struck North Judson last Friday between three and four AM. Lightning damaged farm stacks near Albert Janecek and damaged H C Nettarveng home. Trees split and lights out townwide. In Pittsburgh news, O C McClure and four associates demand raises while Gladys Horton letters offer as general manager in Rostoria.
Harold L Boyesen ordered a batch of The News sale bills dated Wednesday September 11. He has rented his farm and will move with his family to Chicago.
The Houston Chronicle reports three Reed brothers from Mrs J D Reed of North Judson Indiana serving in the U S Army. Austin Reed stationed at Pershing's headquarters in France with five years service recalls Vera Cruz occupation and 1815 Texas City duty. Leroy Reed with the Engineers met his brother in France after seven years apart. William F Reed on border duty awaits departure for France.
The Exempted Men's Organization will meet in Karch's J Hall on Tuesday September 10 at 8 30 p m. Attendance is mandatory for all 91 members in Wayne Township who have deferred classification. Members with night jobs are excused but must still pay the dues and attend future meetings. Orin Schuyler presiding with Ray Brooks Walter Guenther Otto Kriss as officers.
Ten more boys left for Camp Grant on a special two man limited service call. Knox dentist Dr L W Bortz and Washington township schoolteacher Wm Roy Piper led the group. A general service call for ten men to report to Camp Taylor by Sept three was issued to Knox, with Rudolph Dusek Mike Amico Henry F Dubas Frank W Noetzel Albert Jana William H James Harry E and Donald R Strader among those ordered to report. Savery and Crider, substitutes, remained.
Most residents observed the no gasoline order on Sunday while about a dozen cars appeared on the streets. Some carried rural residents to church or served legitimate needs but most were used for pleasure. The community largely backed the government plea to save gasoline.
Paul Evert from Great Lakes naval station plans a mid month departure abroad. J. H. Spenner’s overseas arrival is confirmed by a card to Mr and Mrs John Spenner. Ollie Walker from Green Bay visited family in Blue Sea and Slammond with brother Jeff. Sullivan and daughter Louise visited Joe Sindelar’s home earlier in the week, and Labor Day trips to Culver and Bass Lake followed. Agnes Lamb and son William of Denham, visiting for the first time in 37 years, are linked to Geo M Fuller and Son Co jewelers findings in Chicago.
Government order bans free copies and discounts, forces cutoffs for readers in arrears and caps paper use. Publications must reduce size or weight, with Oct. 1 effective date and credit limits enforced. Names of subscribers in arrears listed for The News.
North Judson fans recall local players once feared at the plate. The Democrat of Knox reports several youths heading for military duty. Dallas Solliday recently transferred to Hampton Roads, Va., with likely active service soon. Hugh Stevens already left for the same destination. Robert Fletcher and Joseph Arnsdorff have passed examination for the Marines and may enlist in two weeks. Ward Wilhelm enlisted in Chicago and expects training soon. Louis Morlan Weldon Bogan and Raymond Cooper plan to try for the Marines in Chicago tomorrow.
Mrs Oreste Bernardi and Mrs Blaschke with daughter Miss Louise visited the Frank Dusek Thos Wesseley and Frank Lurjanek families at Gary on Thursday and Friday.
