An examination of the fly’s cuplike feet and body hairs explains how it can carry germs. Typhoid, tuberculosis, dysentery and other diseases have been linked to flies through contaminated bread milk and sputum. One estimate suggests a single fly may harbor millions of germs.
Commissioners S A Unca I Stephenson and Clerk Hartzler have drawn the grand and petit jurymen for the May term of court which convenes next Monday.
Joseph Zoun died last Sunday at 6 30 am after a battle with bowel cancer. He was 56, born March 1856 in Europe, immigrated at age 11, wife died six years ago, survived by five children, mother, and three sisters. Body brought to Indianapolis for burial after services at his late home. Clergy names noted. Also mentions Odd Fellows grand lodge attendance in Indianapolis.
In Squire Lawrence's court Firman Alla Mosta Gotta, an Italian on the Panhandle, is charged with shooting at Firman Wanchel with intent to kill after Firman warned him to stop watching his sister Helen. The Italian drew a gun, bullets misfired. Desento was pursued and captured at Drunecky crossing, returned to town, jailed in Knox hotel.
Bad Wreck Sunday on the Erie J. Ray Dickinson engineer and Emery Hosler fireman both of Hartington Ind were killed five miles east of Decatur when an Erie passenger train on a temporary track ran off the rails No Passengers were killed or injured Engineer Dickinson was a former Indiana legislator Huntington school board member and ex city councilor The wreck involved No 8 east bound on the Erie with a steel mail car baggage car and one coach damaged but no passengers harmed Conductor Al Space and Trainman Jesse Paul of Huntington led the train crew.
Charles M. Reeg and Miss Bertha M. Lain were married last Thursday at Round Lake by Rev. E. S. Chandler. The couple, both locally rooted, plan a short wedding journey and will reside in Aldine where Reeg works in stock trading with his brother Frank.
Mrs. Owen Daly and children of San Pierre attended the commencement exercises Friday evening. Daniel Kreis and wife and Master Eddie Mosher were guests at Hammond over Sunday. Mrs. T. C. Dye and Miss Mary Kasch are in Indianapolis this week attending the Rebekah grand lodge as delegates from the local order.
The 1918 high school class at Burch Hall received diplomas before fifteen graduates. Majors include Richard P. Christensen, F. Clair Collins, Edward D. Akers, Joseph Hook, Clayton Zehner, Goldin Haschel, J. Robert Manz, F. Peter Irmiter, Frank Kiedrowski, Grace Clark, Victor White, Clarence McVey, Magdalene Potlack, Grace Arndt, and Elia Pawlisch.
The high school alumni association held its annual banquet at Burch's hall on Saturday evening. The program featured piano solos by Miss Lulu Wiegner and Miss Nanel Smith, a reading by Miss Nettie Smalley, and a duet by Miss Wiegner and Mrs. Orin Schuyler. Harvey Geddes of St. Joe and Otto Neupert of Chicago were guests of honor. Officers elected for the year: Orin Schuyler President, Edw. Akers Vice President, Cecil Brown Secretary, Nanel Smith Treasurer.
Joe Akers from Arco Idaho visited his parents and old friends last week. Several local youths head to Terre Haute to attend the State Normal for the Summer including Grace Clark Florence Safford Nettie Smalley Frank Kiedrowski Augustine Dusek Chas Hetfield and Clair Collins. Dusek and Hetfield rode motorcycles on the trip.
A man named Mr. Zedeck felt sudden pain in his right shoulder while a family member, Charley, bathed him. A needle, 15.8 inches long, was extracted from under the shoulder blade using pincers. The family believes he swallowed it as a child, and it has haunted him with rheumatic-like pain. The needle is on display at the News office.
The Dandy Dixie Minstrels will perform on Thursday May 22 featuring a big first part with the Mississippi steamboat Robert E Lee arrival and radium light effects. The program promises clean old time southern melodies and acts suitable for refined audiences.
The News introduces Home Town Spirit, a 16 to 24 page monthly magazine for paid subscribers mailed with the paper. It promises short stories, women and children content, a fashion page, farmer talks, humor, and other departments plus an eye catching cover.
B Donchin and his young son visit Chicago for several days while Dr. F G Davis spends time in Indianapolis attending the state dental association sessions and the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows meeting.

North Judson defeated the San Pierre Crows in a long Sunday game that went ten innings. A large crowd watched the exciting contest with several autos full of San Pierre residents present.
Epworth League members hosted a pleasing anniversary program Sunday at the M B K church. Officers installed for the year include President Mrs E E Clements 1st Vice President Miss Charlotte Arnold 2nd Vice President Mrs L B Wakeman 3rd Vice President Miss Mary Kasch 4th Vice President Miss Nanel Snouth Secretary Clara Neuport Treasurer Paul Arnold.
Unclaimed matter in this office includes Fred oyeson Hank Bros David Little Jesse J Marshal Pousling Schrader Willows and others. If not claimed within two weeks the mails will be sent to the Dead Letter Office. Also Indiana Sunday School Convention set for Evansville June 17 18 19 closing the 19th year of the State Association.

A minstrel show is advertised to perform under a tent this evening. Christ Sautter Otto Altmann and Frank Canby with W Newburg enjoyed a Bass Lake fishing outing. Otto blamed the fish, Newburg blamed Otto, but all had a good time.
