A heated exchange letters between C A McCormick Knox Indiana and Comrade O D Hepner North Judson regarding the proposed county memorial building for Starke County soldiers. Both sides defend locating the memorial at the county seat and criticize the other’s framing and jealousy claims while urging public input and fairness to taxpayers.
In a note from Wayne township readers consider the tax impact of railroads and major corporations. The letter cites Wayne township valuation at 4 199 985 with railroads and firms at 3 363 360, saying these entities would pay over 74 percent of Wayne taxes while a 3 mill levy would cost residents about 310 dollars. North Judson would see about 47 percent paid by corporations.
A brief note from the North Judson News dated February 19 1920 introduces a public objection by Mr Hepner. The piece hints at local controversy and prompts community discussion in the small Indiana town.
The proposed $50 000 memorial hall for Knox draws strong opposition across Starke County with many townships arguing the county should not burden outside towns for a center seat project. Petitions circulate and critics say a county memorial hospital or other memorial would be fairer while the News backs widespread taxpayer sentiment against the project.
A Knox businessman argues against a proposed Memorial Hall, contending it costs seven thousand dollars yearly, provides little benefit to farmers or schoolchildren, burdens taxpayers for a long time, and questions the hospital idea as more useful. He urges no tax burden for a structure seen as unnecessary.
A remonstrance signed by 116 Center township farmers and Knox citizens against the proposed county memorial hall was filed with the county commissioners. A longer remonstrance for Hamlet and vicinity says more are on the way.
The local Masonic Chapter and Council were inspected last Wednesday afternoon and evening by State Inspector J. J. Glendenning of Indianapolis. A number of visiting Masons were present. Refreshments were served in the evening and a pleasant session is reported.
Judson Creamery and Produce Co brings high grade Guernsey calves from Wisconsin to Starke County. The first car of about 70 calves arrives in 10 days with roughly 150 already spoken for, and plans to ship 300 this spring. Calves weigh about 100 pounds and are from two to four weeks old from milk rich cows.
Leonard Alva Welsh, longtime North Judson and English Lake resident, died in South Bend on Friday February 26 after a brief pneumonia illness at age 63. He is survived by his former wife, a son Frank of Muncie, Indiana, and a daughter Lola of South Bend. The body was brought home Monday and buried in Highland Cemetery after services at the M. E. Church led by Rev. Collier.

The Arnold greenhouses in North Judson will reopen under new owners. Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Deardorff of this city will lease for spring trade while a Pontiac Michigan buyer takes charge June 1. Deardorffs will focus on home trade and floral design, with expansion planned on the east property. The Burbank Farms ordered 150000 cabbage plants, and the Deardorffs seek steady local support for first class goods and fair business methods.
The Kewanna Herald asks what is wrong with America and Editor Gould answers with a critique of excess and misplaced values. He cites luxury, consumerism, and envy, contrasting them with hard work, old-fashioned Christianity, and democratic compassion.
Pvt. Robert B. Williams of the famed First Division arrives Monday afternoon to aid recruitment with headquarters at Pickell's Cafe. He will recruit for this division and other service branches for a few weeks. One year enlistments are now open in the Field Artillery and Engineers. See the recruiting officer for details.
Miss Ida Dux is home from a two weeks vacation. The Lutheran Ladies Aid will meet Thursday afternoon at Mrs. Wm Stauffer's home. A California Township Farmers Association meeting is at Bass Junction School House Friday at 8 p m. Officers note Mr and Mrs Wm Stauffer will move to LaPorte next week for a carpenter job at the Rumely factory. County Commissioner Fred Kingman found sentiment against the proposed county memorial hall in Wayne and Railroad townships.
