A respected pioneer is reported to have died Thursday night after a dramatic public event. The scene involved admirers and local leaders honoring the deceased, whose name is withheld in this brief. The community mourns as tributes pour in.
Mrs Rebecca Knachel dies at age 75 11 months 24 days after a lingering illness at her brother L J Lowers home in San Pierre Indiana. Born February 1 1849 in Perry County Ohio she lived in Morrow County Ohio before moving to Indiana. She married George Knachel in 1802 and had no children. Survived by four brothers two step-children and one step-son. Funeral conducted by Rev Harvey at the U B church in San Pierre with interment in the old cemetery.
A large group of Starke county educators plan to attend the twenty eighth annual Northern Indiana Teachers association meeting in Fort Wayne on April 7 9. The general session is Thursday evening and Saturday forenoon with Friday afternoon devoted to high school grade art manual training and other sections. Key speakers include Dr George E Vincent Dr William H Allen Dr Luther Halsey Gulick Dr William f George Lt E Shackleton Dr W A Millis Eleanor Smith George at TADS Wabash and Dr C H Bennett.
A Laporte special warns the Kankakee valley faces draining schemes aimed at destroying the famed hunting preserve. Syndicates have bought swampy lands along the river to drain and colonize, while Chicago and Indiana clubs lease vast tracts for hunting and fishing. Attorneys plan to oppose the drainage as rapid land purchases threaten the region's future as a hunting ground.
Starke county farmers count five to six hundred who benefited from seed corn and milk production lectures and trips. They await the state railroad commission ruling on free transportation for such educational specials amid questions of legality and possible state hardship.
The News reports government garden seeds are available for free distribution. Residents who may have missed mail deliveries are urged to visit the office to receive seeds, with instructions that grown people must pick up and avoid sending children without a written order.
Mrs. Mary Clark of Chicago, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Bockhausen, died early Tuesday at her parents country home after a long struggle with consumption. She was 41, married 23 years ago to Dennis P Clark. Funeral services are set for Thursday at 2 from the Catholic church with Father Keyser officiating. burial will be in the Catholic cemetery.
State of Indiana v L Bader former Winamac Bridge Co general manager was found guilty in Jasper County circuit court for submitting inflated bills after a lighter bridge was installed at Milroy township. He was sentenced to two to four years in the penitentiary and has requested a new trial. Additional notes mention August Kain from San Pierre and Dr W J Solt from San Pierre, with Atty W C Pentecost of Knox handling matters.
