Pioneer Mat Lawrence dies after Civil War service
Matthew Lawrence a long-time North Judson resident died last Sunday after a lengthy illness. Born May 24 1833 in Delaware County Ohio he was 81. He married Mahala McCray in 1859 and had eight children. Survived by Geo W Lawrence Mae Lawrence Mrs Harry Feece Mrs Rhoda Spoor and several grandchildren. Funeral Monday at 1 30 pm at his home with Rev Davis officiating and burial at North Judson cemetery.

Forty five guests from Bachelor's Hall enjoyed games boating and a large supper at Taggart hotel. A night near disaster on the Mayflower occurred when fog caused a sandbar grounding but all were rescued and unharmed.

The Kankakee river project, led by W F Powers after Horace Marble’s death, dates to 1907 with opposition from Browns and Pinney. Dismissal clears the way for contract letting anticipated in September. the project could reclaim thousands of acres across Jasper Newton Porter and Lake counties with a main ditch and laterals costing about a half million dollars.
