Benjamin F. Clifton former pastor faces trial in Montgomery circuit court on December 18 for alleged theft of a car owned by Thomas Harwood. In Covington Fountain county a prior case against Clifton for stealing a Prest-O-Lite tank was halted due to a faulty affidavit. Clifton’s brother Albert Clifton is defended by Charles M. McCabe with Walter H. Linn as prosecutor assisted by Harry N Fine and Andrew N Foley. The defense cites temporary insanity from overstudy. The car later tied to Clifton was recovered at his home in Clifton.
Last Wednesday's Ladies Aid meeting featured intense factional campaigning as two slates vied for posts. After heated balloting the results named Mrs. El Wakeman as President, Mrs. J A Tomlinson as First Vice President, Mrs. A C Polerte as Second Vice President, Mrs. C B Merriam as Secretary, and Mrs. R B Akers as Treasurer.
Bert Fruits arrived in Chicago on Monday and stayed into Tuesday while Mrs. Pat Welsh of English Lake was in town Saturday. Two express inspectors checked Fr Knachel's office Monday and reported everything in tip top shape.
Competent official R A DeWitt praised the Peter J Kruger IRS office after reviewing the books. He found no discrepancies and said the office is in exceptionally fine shape. Kruger has managed regular duties plus income tax war tax and narcotic act enforcement.
Deputy wardens P J Lavery and Frank Hay of Bass Lake warned sportsmen that Sunday hunting laws will be strictly enforced and violators face fines not less than $18. They noted recent complaints and said several new licenses were issued by Clerk Kreuter after their visit, urging compliance with the state Department of Fish and Game order.
Relatives and friends here were shocked by the news from Indianapolis that Lon Craig died suddenly at his home there on Wednesday morning around 5 o clock from acute indigestion. He was a well known traveling salesman with a large state-wide acquaintance and served as township trustee in Indianapolis. Previously he was a prominent businessman of North Judson. Funeral arrangements are not yet set but may be brought to Winamac for burial with services likely Friday or Saturday.
Standard Oil at Whiting refinery cleared a 700000 barrel surplus last week and is shipping the daily output as demand remains strong. Analysts say future price moves are uncertain but point to higher costs for motorists if demand persists.

The Ladies Aid Society of Round Lake church hosts a Hard Time Social on Wednesday evening December 15 at the church. Supper features beans pickles corn bread white bread apple sauce butter pie coffee for 15 cents. A sale of aprons fancy work and a comforter will take place with prizes for the homeliest dressed man and prettiest dressed lady.
Hon Oliver Wayne Stewart of Chicago former Illinois legislator will speak at the Methodist church on Sunday December 12 at 10 30 a m under the Flying Squadron Foundation auspices. All are welcome.
