PennDOT plans to invest 21.5 million dollars to patch the state road system under an annual program led by Secretary Jacob Kassab. He will tour the 11 engineering districts to oversee work, with district engineers assigned full time to potholes and coordinated patching across counties.
At the Reserve commissioners meeting on March 13, officials reviewed the Mount Troy Volunteer Fire Co. dispute over a snowy fire. The road crew argued they were plowing and salting when called, while a sprinkler alarm proposal for the Mount Troy garage was approved up to 250 dollars. The board also approved allowing 14 year olds to join the fire department with no firefighting duties, and left several fire dept requests for later consideration.
Marvin Pease of 903 Rutgers Drive Shaler told police the left front wheel and tire were stolen from his Dodge van parked in the Shaler High School lot. Pease is a Shaler High School student and reported the theft on Tuesday.
Shaler Area School District will seek a new football coach after Board President Richard G. Zimmer announced Tuesday that Lou Martig’s $1,800 one year contract would not be renewed. The district cited a 2-6-1 record and noted Martig remained committed to teaching duties. two committee votes supported the decision amid mixed public reaction.
Shaler Area School District could end the 1971 72 year with a 752000 deficit. George M McComb presented figures to directors highlighting shortfalls in property tax revenue and state funds. He noted a 17 percent expected tax rise but a five percent gain, capital outlay covering part of the deficit and urged strict budgeting with Harvey Cross Jr appointed to oversee expenses.
Shaler commissioners opened two bids for fire radio equipment. Mobile Radio Service offered 11,175 dollars and Motorola 16,196 dollars. The package includes a base station, remote unit, six fire department base stations, one encoder, six decoders, and six monitors for placement in the municipal building. The Shaler Firemen's Association had requested the equipment a year earlier and the bids were sent to a committee for tabulation and recommendation.
An impasse between Cumberland Hills School board and striking AIUSSEA special education teachers and personnel continues over managerial rights and noneconomic demands. Picketing Dr. Potter’s office occurred as talks stalled, with unions citing 19 nonbargainable items from a 25 item list and unresolved noneconomic issues including grievance procedures and terms of employment.
Allegheny County Housing Authority officials say the seven story Corbett Apartments in Ross will give priority to Ross residents, with about 1,000 visitors at last open house and leases signed by 35 people, including six couples, as interviews continue through March.
U S Senator Edmund Muskie arrives in Pittsburgh on Wednesday to launch his Western Pennsylvania primary campaign. He will open campaign HQ at Fourth Street after the Illinois primary, in a race featuring Eugene McCarthy. Rep. Michael Mullen will step aside to back Rep. Andrew Fenrich, later serving as Fenrichs campaign manager. Fenrich, completing his 15th House year, chairs the House Labor Relations Committee. Lawrence Canning of 203 Gass Road Ross is held for grand jury action on involuntary manslaughter in a Feb 25 East Street crash that killed 33 year old William Brant Ill of Sewickley. Police cite drunken driving reckless driving and driving too fast for conditions.
Millvale police arrested two Ross youths at a dance Wednesday evening for violating the law prohibiting drinking by minors. Stephen Edward Schmidt, 19, of 7 Cold Spring Drive, and William Joseph Igersheim, 18, of 5006 Towers Terrace, were arraigned before District Justice Andrew S. Skundrich, posted $36 bond, and a hearing was scheduled for Thursday.
Police said a break-in attempt at Matthew Petrosky’s home on 101 Buckhill Road Ross occurred March 13. A dog scared the youth, who fled in a small red sports car.
