McCandless Sanitary Authority cuts summer metered sewer rates

The McCandless Township Sanitary Authority adopted a June resolution cutting sewer charges based on metered water use by 10 percent for July and August, effective in areas with metered sewer bills. Longview district and Alcosan portions are excluded. The move follows a prior 10 percent cut in March or April and targets summer lawn irrigation costs amid ongoing rate disputes.■

Bradford Woods mayor resigns as Riester steps down

William M. Riester resigned effective midnight June 14 after reading his notice to the council on June 7 citing a move to McCandless. Paul Fink will serve as mayor until year’s end. Tester was appointed three and a half years ago after Ellsworth Hoffman resigned amid plans to move. Borough eyes wage tax vote and zoning changes. Pine supervisors plan to talk road and bus plans for North Park pool. McCandless zoning requests slated for June 21. hearings on sewer district damages set for June 24. Bradford Woods will election a new mayor in November and will hire a borough employee for 150 dollars monthly by July 1 to oversee street projects.

Northway and Highland schools seek new principals

Northway Elementary will gain a full time principal after its addition opens 16 classrooms. Highland School with 13 rooms also needs a dedicated principal. Northway, Highland, and Highcliff currently share principals, and the North Hills Joint Schools Interim Operating Committee voted to hire new principals for all three sites.

Marshall play tax expansion sparks school merger concerns

Marshall towns plan to merge four districts July 1 forces uniform taxes across Marshall Franklin Park McCandless and Bradford Woods. Tax collectors named as North Hills district officials

Mrs Harry C Bitzer Jr, treasurer of Ross Township, was named wage tax and amusement tax collector for the new North Hills School District effective July 1. Mrs Naomi Guckert of West View will continue as wage and amusement tax collector. Amusement tax fee set at 3 percent and wage tax at 4 percent in Ross. Guckert’s pay remains $75 monthly plus shared costs. Forms supplied by the district. Big time in the woods Bradford Woods marks 50th anniversary with a community celebration on Saturday June 12.

Interstate 79 North Hills links six years away still 1972

The state maintains a 1972 completion target for Interstate 79 through North Hills including the East Street Thruway and North Hills Bypass. Final design proceeds for the East and Evergreen to Cemetery Lane interchange with Gannett, Fleming, Corddry and Carpenter handling the next link to Green Valley Golf Course. Route studies project 18 months plus six months to a year for right of way, with several sections under construction or slated for condemnation and new interchanges planned, despite priority lists and local opposition in Ross and Bellevue.

Lightning kills three ponies at North Park event

A Sunday afternoon lightning strike during a pony pulling contest at North Park Sportsman's Club grounds killed three ponies. Two died when a bolt hit a tree and bounced to the tied truck. one belonged to George Swagnet and another to Wilbert Hartman. Fire and bystander resuscitation efforts saved a second pony in Swagnet's team, while several men attempted mouth-to-mouth breathing.

McCandless to unveil long range master plan soon

In weeks McCandless Township will present its master plan developed by Carroll W. Hill & Associates. Northwest Regional Planning Association members from Marshall Bradford Woods Franklin Pine Ohio Cranberry helped shape the study funded jointly by the township and federal Urban Planning Assistance Program. The plan tests three components: existing conditions analysis, future development, and implementation steps for orderly growth.

Fires investigated in two separate Ross blazes

Ross police and firemen investigate arson after two fires at 7700 McKnight Road and a Knoblock quarry site. A tool storage auto burned on Tuesday June 1 and a lubricating oil barrel blaze followed on Saturday June 5. Volunteers from Lau and Knoblock residents report leases expiring two weeks earlier.
