Shady Side Academy Commencement Sees Record Merit Honors
Commencement is set for Friday at 3 p.m. in Mellon Gymnasium. John P. Fishwick of Norfolk and Western Railway will address the class. Edwin F. Scheetz Jr. will distribute diplomas. Valedictorian is Karen L. Stahlfeld. Nineteen female graduates entered as freshmen when coeducation began in the school’s 90th year. Of 98 graduates, 35 gained spots at Ivy League colleges or MIT. Twenty one percent earned National Merit recognition, with nine finalists, the highest Pennsylvania merit rate for two consecutive years.
