North Hills and neighboring boards set Jan. 3 organization
Local governments in Richland, Ben Avon Heights, Shaler, Ross, McCandless and other Greater North Hills municipalities plan organization meetings on or around Monday January 3 or Tuesday January 11 with oath taking for new officials. Richland opens at 9 a.m. as customary. Shaler and Ross hold 7:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. sessions respectively. Ben Avon Heights departs from the Jan. 3 date for Jan. 11. New terms for commissioners and councilmen will be sworn in, with officers like president, vice president, secretary and treasurer to be appointed.

West View Democrats angered by lame duck actions at a council meeting after terse private caucus. The debate centered on reappointing Walter Baker to the Municipal Authority and amid party lines a 4 to 3 vote kept Baker and Freese on the six member board. The session ended with a vow to pursue litigation and the meeting adjourned in memory of Joseph Berkley.

Hampton father of 7 killed crossing Route 8
James E. Lavelle 45 a United States Steel product representative and Hampton resident was struck and killed while crossing Route 8 near Old Route 8 after getting off a bus. Driver 19 year old Charles Fink received hospital treatment for shock. Lavelle left seven children and was active at St. Ursula Church.
