The Valley Daily News sports editor argues for radical changes to the WPIAL structure. He calls for a central office with a dedicated administrator, a secretary, and direct school liaison, plus a playoff system to settle titles and reduce ties.
North Hills and North Allegheny high schools place three players each on the District II WPIAL All Star team while Allegheny Valley and Charleroi also contribute multiple selections. Final Section 1 standings list Allegheny Valley 42, Fox Chapel 0, North Hills 15, North Allegheny 15 as soccer continues in the West Penn Junior Soccer league.
North Allegheny girls basketball avenges last year loss to Mount Alvernia with a 59-34 victory as Jeanie Newman scores 23 and Marlene Graham adds 19. Lions’ Frances Boehrng leads with 7 while NA dominates the second half and Jah Kaiser shines on defense. In the opener NAJV beats Mount Alvernia 37-28 as Linda Nichols nets 20 and Audrey Davison 14.
In Clarion County near the Penn Elec Recreation Area 15 year old Buddy Wood Jr of McCandless shot his first deer a spike buck about 100 pounds from a tree stand using a 30 30 Remington one neck shot. He is a Cumberland Hills School student and North Allegheny Rocket Club member a taxidermist will mount the head as a gift.
North Catholic tackle Kelly Harrington earned UPI honorable mention as the district’s sole All-State pick. District players led WPIAL First Team selections including Calvin Balliet and Mark Schneers at North Allegheny and Mike Paviloms of North Hills. Bellevue, Etna, Avalon also placed on various first teams and honorable mentions amid Class AA and B honors. North Catholic dominated local League All-Stars with Harrington and four others.
The Western Pennsylvania Wheelmen plan a Sunday banquet at Richland Restaurant after a 2 pm social hour to honor cyclists who completed the Century Run. Forty riders clocked distances from 25 to 100 miles around North Park Lake with times listed for each participant.
