Ross Township to levy new taxes to cover 1977 deficit
Ross Commissioners moved to raise home and business taxes to cover a $260,000 to $280,000 shortfall in the 1977 budget of $33 million. Property taxes will rise 0.75 mills, plus a 1 mill library levy. Mercantile and business privilege taxes of 0.75 mill each will apply to retailers, wholesalers, and service providers. Total expenditures for Northland Library run to $251,657, with highways and police costs also increasing.

Walter Thomas Dies at 59 in Marshall Township Hospital Career
Walter Thomas 59 longtime North Hills hospital administrator died at his Farmindale Drive home in Marshall Township after a heart attack. He served 10 years as assistant director at North Mal Passavant Hospital and earlier helped open St John’s General Hospital emergency center. A veteran of the Army Medical Service Corps, he was active in police, church disaster drills, and regional emergency planning. He was known as Walt to friends and was an honorary Ross Township Auxiliary member.

The Soergels from Moon Township, a father arborist and his son landscape architect, supply Christmas trees for commercial sites. This year they found a 24 foot Douglas fir weighing about 1000 pounds at Moon Township nurseries, cut it for delivery to Heinz Hall, and will display it from morning to evening on Babcock Boulevard. The family has operated in the Pittsburgh area for 25 years.

Peoples Gas increases Western region fuel charges in January
