Athens May 7 Greek rulers threaten war rather than concede Crete withdrawal. Greece warns powers of possible extermination outcome if mediation fails. Authorities say Greek fleet has set a naval blockade off Epirus coast and orders recalled twenty five officers plus two sapper companies from Crete.
Rome correspondent notes royal family isolation and portraits withdrawn. Queen and princesses face insults during hospital visits as Palace is monitored by revolutionary agents. Turkey seen as obstacle to mediation while Turkish forces approach Volos with Greek forces retreating toward Tamla and Domokos.
Constantinople May 7 Telegrams state Mdhem Pasha is ordered to advance on Domokos immediately as part of ongoing military operations. The dispatch confirms a rapid strategic push amid tension in the region.
Turkish forces bivouac near Pharsalos after capturing nearby villages in a dawn battle. Greek artillery opened fire but Turkish troops pressed forward. Greeks retreated from key positions and suffered heavy losses at a stone river bridge as Turks closed on Vasili and other targets. News by Associated Press correspondent from bivouac headquarters.
A report notes items seized include mountain battery and eighteen mules, large stock of ammunition and provisions, along with the personal effects of Princes Constantine and Nicholas.

Athens May 7 Greeks at Volo ordered not to hinder Turkish entrance to spare town from ruin. Smolenski’s forces move by sea to Almyras. 2,000 Italians under Garibaldi depart for frontier. Greek losses light in Wednesday battle, but strategic importance remains. Greeks fortify railway area while Turks hold steady under heat.
Berlin May 7 The Lokal Anzeiger says the King of Greece formally asked Russian mediation. It notes that the abdication question hinges on Tinganeseal considerations. It adds that at the crown’s rise the agreement provided an allowance of 2000 pounds yearly, reduced to one third if he abdicates.
Newport News May. The ird union meeting of the Maryland Washington and Virginia Dental Societies was called to order at Old Point Comfort today by Mr. William Donnelly. Dr. Thomas H. Marramore of HIlimapton delivered an address of Welcome, which was responded to by Dr. T. S. Waters, president of the Maryland society. Papers on dentistry were read by Drs. James McManus Hartford D D, Pp. Smith LT. Steel Richmond W Th. Pinney F. W. Schioendarn Q. Greaves HW. Abendsehein S. Cregon and E S. Waters Baltimore PT. 13. Noble J. Tl. Wolfe A. W. Sweeney and M. F. Finley Washington J. N. Crouse Chicago and G. L. Wood Roanoke. The members of the association were entertained at a banquet tonight.
In Mimntsville Alabama a toxic mystery unfolds at Jeff where Joshua O. Kelly, his family, and tenants were poisoned two months ago. Initial theory blamed Mrs. Kelly's cupboard poison, but a broader plot to target the family emerges as more people fall ill after breakfast, including a Cleveland drummer who stayed at Kelly's.

The Southern Baptist Convention met at First Baptist Church in Wilmington on May 7 1897 with Jonathan Haralson re elected president after a 721 delegate tally. The Whitsett controversy dominated the session as Dr Whitsett of Louisville issued a clarifying letter to the Seminary trustees while trustees reaffirmed fundamental doctrines and urged restraint in historical questions.
The ninth annual meeting of the Woman's Missionary Union auxiliary to the Southern Baptist Convention met at the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington at 9:30 a.m. President Miss F. Heck of Raleigh presided. Officers reported receipts of 407.00 for Sat, 201 for Home Missions, 28,476.33 for Foreign Missions, with total expenses of 1,855,680. The Christmas offering expenses were 180.48, home board 790, and Sunday School 200. The officers served without pay as volunteers. The enrollment committee showed strong Southern and Southwest participation. Adjourned to meet again at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
Nashville crowds flock to the Tennessee Centennial Exposition as Ossell Circle holds a morning convocation in the Woman's Building led by Knoxville president Mrs. Charles A. Perkins. Barnard’s air ship captivates visitors though not on display. Tennessee Industrial School pupils and young Methodist Bishops address attendees. Parthenon opening looms with Hopkins Smith scheduled to speak. Exhibits keep arriving and schools prepare for a big day tomorrow with ten thousand pupils expected. Buildings will stay open until 9 p.m. each night.
A special ten mile match race at Memphis Coliseum featured Jimmy McFarland of California and Jack Michels for 3300. Michels broke the world record by covering ten miles in 20 minutes 25 seconds, while McFarland abandoned after three miles. The previous record of 20 minutes 18 4/5 seconds was set by McDuffie in Boston last September.
The American Society in London hosted a farewell banquet for Mr Bayard former U S ambassador attended by 270 guests including Ambassador Hay, the Lord Bishop of London and Lady Jeune. Notable absences were prominent American bankers and residents. Bayard brought the Mayflower to display in the reception area as the evening center of attention.
St G Dun & Co Weekly Review of Trade notes April sales by lending houses in 14 cities barely 10 percent below April 1892 and 10 percent above last year, with improved crop prospects for cotton and spring wheat, rising Atlantic exports, and mixed manufacturing demand. Failures show declines in number and amount, while iron and steel output slows as furnaces pause and prices fall in several sectors.
The report notes rising iron ore and steel demand in several Western hubs, with export grains reaching 1,740,222 bushels from both U S coasts and Canada. It also reports declines in pig iron prices, a surplus in production, and unsettled retail demand due to cold weather.
