A dispatch from Athens reports renewed fighting as Turkish forces press Mati and push Greeks back. By midnight the Greeks retreated in good order to entrenched positions on characles. Greek troops hold Pontepligadia heights near Epirus, with operations expected to end soon.
AP dispatches from Larissa detail the fighting around Annunciation hill and Nezeros led by a village pastor. Greek artillery under Captain Pier and Evzones repelled Turkish assaults, with heavy casualties and a strategic Greek defense along the ridge above the lake.
New York Greek community women form an auxiliary committee to aid Cretan refugees and support Red Cross hospital and battlefield relief amid the Greco Turkish conflict. An appeal for funds has begun, with the Chamber of Commerce opening a subscription list.
The appeal notes daily increases in the number of refugees and in the sick and wounded, stressing an urgent need to raise and collect as much money as possible for the relief effort.
Norfolk music lovers missed a treat as Dr Minor Baldwin delivered a superb organ recital series at Freemason Street Baptist Church. In Emporia Virginia on April 24 the Franklin Kildees played a practice game at 4 pm. Borton was struck in the left eye by a line drive fielded by Kimball, knocked unconscious briefly, and taken to Dr G T Wood for stitches. The wound’s extent was uncertain but no immediate surgery occurred. Beaton rested and hoped to return as pitcher in about ten days.
The mortal remains of Inte C Verdier were laid to rest in the Collins vault in Cedar Grove yesterday morning. The service from the residence in Ghent drew a large attendance led by Rev Dr W J Young of Epworth Methodist, with Rev Dr B D Tucker and Rev R Ti Jones of the Episcopal Church assisting. Floral tributes included Gates Ajar from the Commission Brokers Association and a Chicago order for friends of the deceased. Pallbearers named were C A Woodward, R P Voight, T White, St Aachary, J P Bolton, Charles Tl Williams, Richard B Fentress, and J Albert Turner.
Dr. Lomax Gwathmey assisted by six physicians carried out a demanding lithotomy on Linwood Nugent, son of A. Nugent of 9 Wool Street, Friday night at St. Vincent’s. The two and a half hour operation relieved days of agony as an inch long stone encysted within was removed and a full recovery is expected.

A Treasury cashier, Harry W. Cassin, misappropriated about 45000 of bank funds for private investments. He exhausted funds chasing losses, but friends and relatives covered the shortage and the bank sustained no loss. Cassin will not be prosecuted and will start life anew in Atlanta.
Philadelphia April 24 warrants have been issued for the arrest of George E Erickson a renal estate broker of West Philadelphia missing for days. An investigation shows he is in defaulter about sh4000 largely from tenants for clients. Merits Son was surviving partner of John M Erickson Co whose recusitions have surprised his business associates. Previous confidence noted.
Williams K Howland, treasurer of New Bedford Manufacturing, Roteh Spinning, and Howkind Cotton mills, is missing amid financial trouble linked to Bennet and Columbia receiverships. Directors will audit accounts. Howland’s whereabouts remain unknown after a threat to drown himself and failure to raise funds.
Charles W. Spalding, president of Globe Savings and treasurer of the University of Illinois boards of trustees, was jailed today by Judge Dunne of the Circuit Court after a bond dispute. The hearing was held. Spalding waived examination amid charges of embezzlement brought by the university.
The Lee Rifles of Norfolk under Capt S H W Shaw invite the Pickett Buchanan Camp Confederates Veterans to take advantage of a 35.22 fare for a round trip by FP and NOR to New York and back. They are asked to join the steamer Old Point Comfort tomorrow afternoon from Norfolk and return from New York Tuesday evening.
The Lee Rifles under Captain Sheen of his city sail tonight by the New York Philadelphia and Norfolks line to New York for Grant monument ceremonies. The company, about forty men, will dine with the Colonel of the fifth Maryland Regiment on Monday and stay at the Tote Marlborough. Some veterans will accompany them and they return on the 5th.
Tomorrow evening at the Y M C A the Odd Fellows mark their seventy eighth anniversary with a program headlined by Porting Deming performing Sheridan Knowles tragedy Virginiugs. Deming, a noted dramatic actor with a polished voice, will deliver a refined interpretation to highlight the work's pathos and dignity.

In St. Louis, April 24, unfavorabe weather cut attendance at Sportsman Park. The Browns scored five runs off eight Hawley wild pitches and five Browns hits, winning 5 to 3 before 800 fans. The trustees of the State Female Normal School in Farmville elected Miss Edna V. Moffett to succeed Miss Clara J. Vickroy in history and literature. Miss Moffett, from Richmond, is a Hollins graduate and Vassar AB, endorsed by Vassar’s president and Richmond teachers. Associate teacher Miss Marguerite Carroll from Norfolk was chosen, with Miss Martha Kennerly continuing in history and English. Plans for a new building by Mr. Wighman of Richmond were approved, to be finished by September 15. The meeting included a dinner, and trustees praised the change of meeting time to April. The school journal was enlarged, a modern Science Hall established, and next year will offer English, Classical, and Scientific courses. Attendance this year is 250.

Richmond dispatch reports the State militia may hold a week long encampment this summer. Soldiers favor tents and army fare, with Waynesboro as a proposed site and Governor O Ferrall reportedly supportive. Last encampment was in 1891 at Wrightsville.
