Ball machines grow at airport playfield batting cages

Cincinnati Recreation Commission officials revamped the Airport Playfield batting cages replacing worn 1930s machines with four baseballs and one softball pitcher. A ball gatherer on a golf cart speeds refills while a new cage design protects staff. Two more machines arrive soon as seven machines may soon switch between baseball and softball in 10 to 15 minutes. A canvas awning is planned to keep cages open in rain. Cost to hit seven balls is a quarter.
