Gov Shaw Re-elected Iowa Governor by 60000 Plurality

The state of Iowa backed Republican leadership with Governor Shaw winning by about 58000 to 60000, while President McKinley’s administration received strong support. Republican gains noted in Jasper County vote and area events

The Jasper County vote shows strong Republican gains with praise for Chairman Dotson and the county central committee. Welcome Home Fifty-First Iowa Troops in Council Bluffs

About fifty Newton residents joined a special two section train to Council Bluffs to greet the Fifty-First Iowa returning from the Philippines after a year and a half. The Knights Templar band led the local delegation of thirty, crowds filled hotels and streets, and forty bands added raucous celebration as the heroes passed the bridge amid patriotic scenes.

Newton mourns as Mrs Wesley Roberts passes away

Mrs. Wesley Roberts died yesterday after long heart trouble and age. She was 14th birthday just last month and leaves two daughters Emma and Amanda. Amanda had died in May. Husband died a year ago after fifty two years of marriage. Funeral at home Sunday afternoon. Mrs Martha Vanatta, known as Aunt Martha, also died Sunday morning at 2.
