Awakening of Hank Black in Slatertown’s railroad boom
In Graham's store the tale unfolds of Hank Black a store clerk who falls for Lucetta Allen while civil engineers lay out a new railroad. Hank quits after a rebuke from Lucetta, seeks schooling to become a real engineer, endures hardship and a near drowning saving Lucetta during a flood. Both pursue education and careers, plan one day to reunite, with the narrator hoping they return next summer.
