H E Laux alias John Brennan pretended to buy cattle from F F Failor in Newton Nebraska. He arranged two large deals worth 3700 and 12000 dollars then tried to obtain extra funds with a forged draft. Bankers caught him. he was arrested in Cedar Rapids and jailed in Newton. The episode links to Holdredge Nebraska and Western cattle markets.

Death of Maher at Greencastle Farm Resident of Ireland
Patrick Maher died at his home near Greencastle last Thursday and was buried Saturday. An Irish native who immigrated years ago, he bought the Wm. Gardner farm west of Greencastle about fifteen years ago and lived there until death. He leaves an ailing wife and eight children. The interment was at the Catholic cemetery near Valeria, with funeral services by Father Quinn. Auditor Horn's eldest son Ray is slowly recovering from lung fever.

Baxter Suffers Destructive Fire Hits Congregational Church
Baxter's town center faced a disastrous midnight blaze last Friday destroying the Congregational church and multiple businesses. Losses include the church, Alsbaugh harness shop, Hager Bros building and stock, Phipps building, and other damaged goods. Fire followed from the Hager building, saving few contents. organs and some church furniture survived. Residents vow to rebuild as earlier 1897 fire had already devastated Baxter. A later hailstorm and a scaffold collapse at east Main street caused minor injuries to Arthur Nutt.

Last Friday Henry Bergman sent twenty fine coach horses to the Chicago market from this station. All are broken to drive single or double and in prime condition. Billie Cronn had them in charge for about ten weeks, preparing them for sale, at Rock Island depot.
