Proceedings of the County Board Special Meeting Newton Feb 1902
The Board of Supervisors met February 24 1902 at Newton Iowa with all members present. They examined the annual invoice for the County Farm and Home totaling 18472 87 and listed assets including cattle hogs poultry farming utensils and provisions. Salaries and running costs were itemized totaling 4346 19 with adjournment planned for February 26. The board also noted subscribers to a card scheme choosing Newton Courier as official county paper and appointed Mrs Jorvenson matron at 20 per month and C T Shill purchasing committee for the County Home and Farm.

The county board met with all members present and approved yesterday's minutes. H C Cowman resigned as Deputy Treasurer and O B Ipp was appointed and bonded. Bonds of five banks as fund depositors were approved. Fire escape contract for County Home awarded to L Kessler & Co for 125 dollars. Auditor to seek bids for vault fixtures and fire proof doors. Jed Jorgenson hired as insane keeper at 27.50 per month. Newspaper contest postponed until tomorrow. Adjourned to 9:30 a.m. February 27.

Board minutes record mortgage cancellation and paper list corrections
On February 27 1902 the board met in regular session with all members present. They ordered cancelation of the School Fund Mortgage from 1859 to David Tripp for 8100 on land in section 21. The Newton RECORD was chosen as an official paper after contest review. The Newton Courier list had twelve duplicate names to strike and seven affidavits of non-subscribers to remove.

Fate of Mart Newton Attributed To Fort Dodge Accident
Friends mourn the strange ending of Mart Newton who fell unconscious after a board struck him at a Fort Dodge courthouse site. He survived initially but mental decline prompted his transfer to Independence Asylum weeks ago. Born and raised in Newton, he once ran a carriage and wagon business with Chas Flory and was nephew to Caleb and Richard Lamb.

Narrowing Smallpox Fear Takes Hold in Town
The smallpox scare is shrinking with only two families under quarantine and none of the cases serious. Chalmer the itinerant tea merchant, quarantined last week, shows improvement, though his wife and child plus Mrs. Chalmer’s sister have contracted the disease, extending quarantine. Jimmie Anderson, visiting his widowed mother, developed symptoms after returning from the Rock Island depot in Altoona, prompting immediate quarantine of the Seeberger property. Anderson's case is mild and his mother and sister remain without signs.

Neighborhood Parties Bid Farewell To Listers At Pleasant View
A pair of lively gatherings in the Pleasant Viewchapel area near town honored Mr and Mrs Samuel Lister on the eve of their move from the farm back to town. Hosted by Mr Harry Longfellow and Mrs John E Benjamin the two Wednesday and Friday evenings drew about forty guests each with lavish feasts and shared warmth. The neighborhood will miss the Listers who leave behind many steadfast friends in the old community.

Sampson Wins 24th Prize From National Tribune
D W Sampson of Washington City received a letter from the National Tribune announcing his victory in the 24th prize on a February 17 1902 treasury receipts guess. A thirty dollar draft accompanies the letter. He served in the Eighty ninth Illinois regiment Company C.

District Court Still Busy Through February Term
The February term of the District Court remains in session with Judge Scott likely to adjourn soon. Jury trials dominated the week including a $1 verdict for damages in Chas Shearer vs Chas Tripplett and a dismissal for four Newton youths on gambling charges. Other rulings: LL FP Craven Co. vs Albert Johnson verdict for plaintiff $125.24 with 30 days to file exceptions. Van Hook vs Richey: defendant found to be of unsound mind. guardian appointed and bond set at 11000. Mr Jerome A Powers, a Des Moines businessman, and wife invite friends home after May 15. Powers tied to local families.

Iowa Wesleyan wins state oratorical title in Des Moines
The Iowa Wesleyan University contingent wins first honors at the Iowa State Oratorical Contest in Des Moines last Friday. Representative Glen Mitchell, a brilliant student, led the victory, marking a rare back-to-back win for the same school. Newton will host a Wesleyan Glee Club concert on Friday night March 21 at the First M E Church.

Scalding accident injures Mrs Lattimer. hurt shoulder for Red Lattimer
Last Friday evening Mrs. Fred Lattimer was scalded when a pan of dish water struck her face, the right side badly burned and reaching into her hair though sight in the eye remained intact. Red Lattimer recently recovered from a run away accident leaving his left shoulder badly dislocated.

Friends in Jasper county mourn the sudden death of David B. Gotshall at his Des Moines home last Thursday morning. He was sixty nine, moved from Newton area years ago, and resided in the city recently. His wife, sister of Chas. P. Robison of Newton, survives. Four children Beatty Chester Matilda Minnie live near Des Moines.

A wedding was held Wednesday evening last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Whitehead in Colfax. Miss Allie Whitehead, the bride, is the host's daughter, and the groom, Will Stouffer, owns a farm near Idaho Falls Idaho. Rev. Mack of Logan Iowa officiated before about forty guests including Mrs Jasper Watts a sister of the bride. A Whitehead feast followed as the couple received well wishes and prepared to move to Idaho for married life.

County officials name official papers for Newton
Official proceedings show the board of supervisors settled county printing last week. Final hearing occurred Wednesday with Courier and Journal attorneys presenting. The board adjourned with no contest, selecting the RECORD as the first official county paper and naming Courier as the second official Newton paper replacing the Journal.
