Navy to furnish convoy for Miles Puerto Rico expedition
Washington cabled orders to Admiral Sampson to supply a naval convoy for General Miles on the Puerto Rico expedition. Delays in convoy caused tension with the president and risked Wilson’s force. Miles waited at Playa del Este amid telegrams, while preparations and reinforcements for Dewey and other Pacific forces continued. Charleston notes the departure of Miles’s expedition under Major General J H W for Porto Rico with Second and Third Westin, Sixteenth Pennsylvania, and Illinois units aboard Grand Duchess and No. 30, while Alger says Miles would leave Cuba with convoyed troops. Arrangements also made for Spanish prisoners to be sent from Santiago to Spain.
