County Law Suit and Local Tragedy In Newton

In Jasper county court Judge Scott rules state special assessment law unconstitutional in a suit by Edward & Walsh Construction Co against Jasper county over courthouse square costs. The ruling will be appealed to the Supreme Court. Also in Newton, the community mourns Flo Marie Rippetoe four year old who died after a cholera infantum illness. Funeral services were held with Rev. John Ferguson officiating as mourners gathered at North Vine street.

Mournful death of Mrs Sabina Airy at Oskaloosa

Mrs Sabina Airy wife of Wm J Airy died at her home in Oskaloosa on Saturday morning July 15 aged 25 years 15 days. Daughter of Daniel and (Mrs) Landmesser born Elk Creek township lived in Oskaloosa. She leaves a husband and two small children. Dread consumption ended a life loved by all. Nieces Geo J Williams and Louie Landmeier with wives attended the funeral.

Young thief confessed after being found burying watch

A Des Moines visitor aged about fourteen stole Mrs Hammers watch while staying with her family. After dinner he disappeared, was found to be the thief, and confessed when threatened with jail. He had buried the timepiece in a corn field and will likely avoid punishment. Also a successful M E church concert impressed Newton. The choir of nineteen and orchestra of ten delivered a fine program conducted by Van Haveskerke and Rodgers.

Judge Clements Opens Habeas Corpus Docket in Disputed Custody Case

Judge Clements heard two writs of habeas corpus last week. The first involved Marvin McDaniel seeking custody of a child raised by the mother's parents Mr and Mrs Andrew Carnahan of Reasner. the case was contested with spirit and taken under advisement. A second case drew witnesses from Lynnville about a wagon pair whose conduct was described as unsavory. the male plaintiff sued for his freedom and was remanded to jail to await the grand jury.

Woman Severely Scalded by Gas Stove Tilt Incident

Last Sunday Mrs J M Duan was preparing morning work when a gasoline stove tilted spilling boiling water on her right arm up to the elbow. A physician arrived promptly and administered remedies, with her condition improving though the injuries are serious and healing will take time.
