Injunction blocks county over hitchbacks at Newton Iowa
Judge Ryan granted a temporary injunction restraining the county from setting out the hitchbacks on a twelve foot strip claimed public use. County Attorney Meredith and City Solicitor Salmon led the case with affidavits supporting long public use of the street. The dispute traces to a 1859 Jasper Free Press note about fencing and walks near the courthouse, suggesting the ground was intended for public use as a highway. The ruling follows a long public interest in Newton as a growing business center and was welcomed by Jasper County residents.
