Homer Cowman resigned as Deputy County Treasurer due to health and returned home to Prairie City. Treasurer Roberts appointed O. B. Kipp of Monroe as deputy and assistant, with Kipp already starting duties. Kipp is the son of longtime Jasper County attorney Jacob Kipp of Monroe and will move to Newton with his wife once a home is secured.
The Pardoe property on West Main street is selected for the new library building funded by Andrew Carnegie’s $10,000 donation. Eighteen pledges of $200 each raised $3,400 to buy the site costing $3,100. The council approved the committee, and a telegram was sent to Carnegie confirming site readiness. The Pardoe lot, near town center, offers two lots and room for a small park around the building.

Last Saturday Mrs. Henry K Warren celebrated her seventy second birthday with a surprise gathering of about twenty old neighbors. Early evening visitors arrived quietly, entering the parlor and joining in the festivities with Mrs Warren. A pleasant supper followed late in the night as gifts including a dress pattern were exchanged among friends such as Mr and Mrs James Jee, Mr and Mrs W H Dodge, Mr and Mrs L Albee, and others.
The sixth annual meeting of the Business Men's Association of Newton will be held in City Hall at o'clock on Friday evening February 1. Members are urged to attend to review the president secretary and treasurer reports and the executive board activities of the year. Elections for new officers will be held to continue the association's work. Officers listed include President Fred M. Taylor Vice President A M Hough Secretary L D Baum Treasurer C Sloanaker and Executive Board W C Bergman Frank Wilson C Seeberger EK E Lambert Willis McColloms.
Mrs Dr Gee KE Blackman of Vernon Texas with her baby Mary visited her aged father H K Parker and friends. She is remembered as Miss Delia Parker who hasn’t returned home since a ten year marriage change. Her husband’s father Geo M Blackman lives with them. the two men own eight sections each totaling 10240 acres, a large Texas cattle ranch with hundreds of head. The family has become notably wealthy since moving to Texas.
Johnny Woodruff returns home after a trip to Arkansas where he stayed with John Lisom and family near Springdale. Fred Firman and wife bought a sixty eight acre farm near Bisom's place and are settled in. Lute Ramsey, from Jasper county, also settled nearby with a good place and plans to stay. Fruit growing is the main industry, apples peaches and small fruits abundant with a ready market at good prices.
