Bursting Flywheels and Safety in High Speed Engines
A historical discussion contrasts flywheel safety in England and the United States. It notes cast iron wheels, up to 60 tons, run safely in England while U S practice employs high speed flywheels with uncertain safety factors. The piece questions cast iron suitability for high speed flywheels and recalls older methods using riveted rims and cemented masonry. It references engineers and a London firm in evaluating safer construction approaches.
