Stricken in Early Manhood Aboard the Newton Band

The funeral of Maurice R. Rodgers was held at the First M. E. Church with large attendance. The Knights Templar Band escorted the body, mourners and friends filling the church as Miss Wettie Earley sang, and Rev. C. W. Leitzell delivered a moving sermon. Rodgers, 22, a Newton native and longtime Knights Templar Band member, died in Alexandria Louisiana after a short illness. He had lived in Newton, Phoenix, Seattle, and Des Moines, pursuing music and a promising career as a slide trombone artist. The obituary notes his loving family, his early education at Newton Normal College, and his dream cut short by illness.
