Soldier Writes of Shenandoah Visit and Battle Remnants
A 1901 letter from Saumville Virginia recalls a Jasper County veteran’s tour of the Shenandoah Valley. He visits Winchester Union Cemetery, Cedar Creek, Fisher’s Hill, Woodstock and Cedar Creek battle sites, noting graves of comrades and a Confederate reunion. He recalls battles, regiments, and a valley road journey with kin guides, ending with reflections on Sheridan’s 1864 campaign.

Birthday of Grandma Scarborough Celebrated in Buena Vista Township
Mrs Haz et Scarborough marked her seventy eighth birthday with a large picnic near Reasnor. About fifty Denniston, Erickson, VanGorder and other families attended. George Denniston and family could not attend. Grandma Scarborough is one of the township’s oldest residents and beloved locally. A sumptuous dinner concluded the day. Separately Parsons Band Cutter and Self Feeder Works plan a new brick two story expansion east of the current building on the Burns lot. Maytag reports plans to begin within thirty days. J Edw Mershon received word from Moscow that his sister Emma de Konschine gave birth to a son, while her father James St Mershon had died recently.
