Meeting of Blue and Gray Reunites at Shiloh Battlefield

Newton Council Adopts Superintendent Gates and Curfew Talk

The Newton council approved renaming city clerk A C Gates as Superintendent Gates after a satire on duties. A plan to trial two boiler cleaners was approved and bids for city printing reworked with dual political papers in mind. A Stillwater curfew ordinance inspired Newton to consider similar action and a sidewalk project on Washington street was debated. The death of Fred Miller at 25 shocked the town, with funeral set for Sunday afternoon.

Obituaries Chronicle Two Local Venerable Jasper County Residents

Hugh Montgomery Murphy a longtime Monroe area settler died April 16 near Bellevue church following a Civil War service and farming life. Ross A. Tait aged 75 died after months of illness. he moved to Jasper County in 1856 and Newton in later years, with funeral at Congregational church.

Kennedy Charged With Attempted Murder In McDonald Street Store

J C Kennedy was arrested Monday after allegedly inviting John Smith to a second story room in Kennedy store on McDonald street opposite the First National bank. Kennedy drew a revolver claiming slander and a confrontation ensued, Smith escaped after a struggle. Bond set at 1000 for appearance and 3000 to keep the peace. Kennedy waived examination and was held to the grand jury.
