County Job Report Shows Unemployment at 2.7 Percent
The Newton Job Opportunities Office released county employment data: unemployment at 2.7 percent, down from 3.3 percent two months earlier and 3 percent in August 1975. Non farm employment rose to 14,575 with gains in manufacturing to 4,250 and contract construction up to 625. Government employment reached 1,250. services fell slightly to 2,775. The report predicts a 100 job rise in non farm wage and salary work in two months and notes holiday shopping and school returns will boost trade and government hiring.

City trims speed limits and reviews I 35W interchanges
City commissioners approved a 35 mph limit for SE and SW 14th near Washington Road, lowered Meridian Road from 45 to 35 mph and 50 to 40 mph in two segments, subject to county approval. They also reviewed Kansas DOT plans to widen acceleration lanes, add lights every 260 feet, and improve interchange turning radii along I-35W between 14th Street and north of Broadway.
