Federal authorities say Lynette Fromme reached within two feet of President Ford in a Sacramento park and raised a loaded .45 pistol. She, a Manson follower known as Squeaky, is charged with attempted murder and held on a 1 million dollar bail. Investigators noted no prior surveillance due to lack of expressed interest in the President.
President Ford says he will continue meeting the American people as he travels despite a loaded pistol incident in Sacramento. Secret Service notes worry that his habit of mingling with crowds could invite further threats. Ford, returning to Washington, met California Governor Brown before resuming his schedule.
