Crosswalk guard 84 retires after decade at Northridge School
J K Schmidt aged 84, longtime crosswalk patrolman at Northridge Elementary, retires after 10 years in the role. He began part time in 1963 and moved to full time three years later, saying he loved the job and the children. Schmidt and his wife have four daughters and two grandchildren. He recalls guiding up to 115 cars in 15 minutes on busy days and notes one accident after hours. The couple, married 58 years, plan to spend retirement in their Newton home yard work and family visits.

City rejects K-Mart bond plan in split vote

Newton woman robbed in daylight strongarm attack
A 72 year old Newton resident, Mrs. Ruby Carson of 206 North Pine, was robbed and injured while talking with a friend in front of her home. A red convertible with two white males stopped, one demanded directions to Wichita, grabbed the purse, and dragged her before she released it. The purse held a billfold, coin purse, about $20, papers, and a checkbook. She sustained abrasions on both arms and a leg. A witness couple observed the robbery.
